For those of you who are blogging or have owned a blog, mainly for personal use, what got you started and how do you keep going with writing and publishing articles? What do you and do you not put in your blog, any tips for those who might possibly want to start one as well?
Starting a personal blog....

I've always wanted to start a personal blog. Never really had the motivation to set it up though. I would probably post about just random things in my life, and also post about web design stuff that I like and think people should know about.
I've made a few attempts at blogs before, but never could get something going. It's always hard to get people to read what you blog about, which has been discouraging for me with a lot of project's I've started. I've had a bit more luck with forums, though, I think.
From my experience with personal blogs so far, I'd say be specific in what you want to write. I also said that I'd just post "random things", "anything" in my blog. But no, it didn't work that easily. At days you will often wonder what you should write; nothing in life is particularly interesting and you don't know what else to do.
So I find having small targets helpful, such as:
- writing reviews of my favorites (e.g. movie, game, music, etc.)
- writing experiences which are special and you can talk a lot about it (e.g. trip to another city/country, attending an event, etc.)
- doing regular things which are meant to be simply for fun (I can't really describe this one; I loved to do Friday 5 when I was still actively writing)
It doesn't always have to be something which recently happened. You can talk about past events which are really interesting for you. Then, in between, when you're not in the mood to talk about those or just want to rant, you post the "random things". That way hopefully there is dynamics in your writing and it becomes something you enjoy.
Few friends who have personal blogs even plan out what they are going to write, take notes of potential ideas, or write on the go using blogging apps on mobile phones. That may help you to stay fresh with ideas.
