How long do you think you should put into;

A website:
A forum:

All before they launch, Codding, adding content etc.

I like to finish web pages before I even put them on the net. You can do all the coding in notepad.

A forum should be setup before you start to advertise, but changes are expected.

Heck, when I started, I put stuff up as I went, and it definitely turned out great. People were posting and talking about the site before we even had an actual domain.

But everyone is different in this regard.

Coding and design for website and forum should be complete along with having some content before it is open to the public.

For me personally a website+forum will take me a month before I'm pleased with it and maybe 2 before i open it to the public.

I worked for about a week with some friends adding topics and posts before we went live we have had a few wee changes since opening

Personally it really depends on the person. Some people can get a stunning website done in about a month. Some can get it done in about 2-3 hours.

For a forum, there is not much that you have to do other then create the custom theme and install mods and set everything up. So I would have to say that I would spend about 2-3 weeks creating a forum.

I plan to launch my new forum tomorrow. I've put about a weeks worth of off and on time into it.

I know one thing a person should do when launching a forum at all is put some content into it, and more than one post per forum, preferably. I used to be bad at that, but now days it aggravates me more than anything when I stumble upon a seemingly good forum, only to find one measly post in all categories, except perhaps Intros and announcements. It really throws me off and I honestly think that a person should spend some time getting content on their site before launching If you're that hard up for ideas, do a few post exchanges to get some form of conversation going.

I just launched a new forum we opened 2hrs early but i got some users (Shole etc) to help me get topics going and so far the forum is doing OK

It's still never a good idea to open a forum with only one topic in every section, though. Doesn't give people much to respond to.

I usually spend a couple of days before starting.

Install Forum and blog (which one is needed). Design a custom theme and install it, install mods, make dummy accounts and post like anything.
