Hey everyone. I am about to open a mybb forum (the skin is almost completed) and I'm looking for a good mod that will help stop spam before it comes. Anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks!

A good CAPTCHA will go a long way. Not the default, but ReCAPTCHA, or maybe another mod. Also make sure to turn on email verification. Iltimately though, it's pretty much impossible to stop spam completely.

The best way is to have a custom registration url. Most spam bots look for the generic registration urls.

MyBB also has some plugins and I think a built in spam blocker (StopForumSpam).

I ran a MyBB board and didn't have any issues with spam. The only time you will get any sort of spam is when an actual person registers on your site manually. However; if you are using any type of forum spam blocker, it usually recognizes their email and stops them from registering on your site.

I also put certain email domains on the blacklist with a wildcard (example *.ru)

Usually a combination of the above will help you eliminate spam 99.9%.

Personally, I use .htaccess to block all of Russia and China. No offense to either country and their citizens but they're 2 of the largest spam producers and I've never had a legitimate user from either country. (I could easily see why for China given that their government tends to heavily censor and monitor their internet access.) That's something you may want to consider for yourself.

Beyond that you should definitely look into ZiNgA BuRgA's spamalyzer plugin for MyBB 1.6 (which you can adapt for 1.8 relatively easily.) With this plugin you can stop 95% of all spam before it ever gets posted without affecting legitimate users.

Also be sure to make use of MyBB 1.8's built in security questions. Though make sure to change them from defaults otherwise they won't do you any good. (The default ones are easily answered by major spambots because the questions are so common.)

My tips are:
-Email AND Admin Activation
-A good Captcha
-Turn on SFS (Stop Forum Spam)
-Add semi-challenging security questions
-Purge spammers as soon as you see them and ban IP + email
-Add a honeypot
-Enable hidden field
-Get the Spamalyser plugin

Security Questions...

However, don't use simple ones such as anything math related or questions like "What does USA stand for?". Ask questions that are relevant to the niche but may have to be Googled for the answer. Sure, you might lose potential members that are too lazy to Google the answer but most are not too lazy or will already know it. For the most part, a good security question is blocking thousands (or more) of spam bots who are not going to look up the answer, they are simply going to move on to the next victim.
