Stop Trolling!

Trolls are very irritating, I usually accidentally fed trolls. But Now I figure ways on how to not feed them. I once joined a forum flocked with trolls. On that forum, they only harras you for a little bit and then they go back to harassing eachother. Although it's kind of fun to complain about other things there cause then they side with me and say something really mean on how stupid it was that happened or whatever.
There was this one forum that I left because these two guys were mean to me and one of them said that he liked to be mean to me for no reason.

I hate forums where people are continuously nice.
I'll admit that too much niceness can be a bit overbearing but I'd rather interact with those types of people instead overly negative/depressing people.

That's why I only really allow one house troll on my forum. The rest of us more than make up for him.

People only troll because they are provoked by those who are egotistical. If people were more empathetic, there wouldn't be trolling, rather discussion.

Trolls are funny at some point, even though they can stop trolling, they always have to find a way to get rid of a member or members from a certain forum/community. Because that's what they do 😛
And on second thought, it is pretty fun to troll around yourself. Say goodbye in someone's welcome/introduction thread and see how they react xD;

What about those who start trolling/harassing staff because they are angry a post got removed or they got warned for breaking a rule?

Then you have to deal with it in an orderly manner, and if the community builds up you simple remove them, that is what I would consider doing.

But they would have to be trolling in another thread, and it would most likely be off topic, so that would be "going off topic", rather than trolling. Harassing people is not necessarily trolling though.

There is a difference between "going off topic" and trolling.

I know, I stated that in my post. If someone makes a new topic and makes harassing comments, that would be deemed harassing and spam, not really trolling. Then that topic would be taken care of, usually.

I would say everybody is entitled to a bit of harmless banter it helps to make the world go round as they say. What I hate is when the banter becomes personal and people become the victims of viscious and disgusting attacks, it's something I feel strongly against and I don't tolerate it.

Yeah I like trolls, no harm in most trolling when its fine. Some times can get annoying i.e. board I lurk has a swedish dude acting like a pakistani who has been there for a number of years and has gone through 11 accounts, and more than 11k posts. All in his troll persona.

Trolls can either be amusing or annoying, depending on how persistent they are and how they come across. I'm an admin on a fairly large forum and we get trolls pretty often, and the ones that just come in and post a few "lol u guyz sux" are amusing and easily dealt with...but the ones that actually barely skirt by breaking the rules the rules (so you can't justify banning them) and just stick around for ages and cause trouble are so annoying that they make it hard to even be around the forum sometimes.

It really depends on the troll and the forum, but I know I don't appreciate when a troll posts up photos of porn and of people being bloodily decapitated for all the children on my site to absorb. We get to it and remove it quickly, but it doesn't change the fact that someone did it, and they don't care. Just because it's all over the place and happens everywhere doesn't mean it's okay or right.

Trolls...

There are also those who pretend to be newbies just to mess with you as an admin and see how much they can transcend in the gray line of rules. Those are the ones that fools me often, because I give too much the benefit of doubt.

Some trolls are clever in their display, they give 'mature' yet radical points of view and then slowly get you in circles in debates. It is interesting to read...

It is just the ones that are bluntly there to cause trouble and post horrible stuff the ones that concern me the most,

In small amounts on certain occasions, it can liven up a forum and make things interesting but usually, I prefer not to see it.

It's one thing to just be joking around with someone, but when it becomes a habit to the point of malice, that's really when you as a staff member have to step in. Sometimes it becomes too much. On a forum I ran a few years back, a bunch of hackers from 4chan invaded and started posting disgusting images on the site, and being 15 at the time, it's easy to say I was pretty scarred by it. It took a good month or so before we were even able to stop the problem, and even then, the forum started to tank as a result.

Occasional trolling is fine if done in moderation, but if done in excess, it can really ruin a forum.

Only if they're really nasty and unsavory.

I actually befriended a troll who trolled my old 2006 forum once; apparently he was hired by someone to troll my forum! Once he spilled the beans we were friends for a while! XD

Trolls can be fun to mess with. If nothing else they usually start up conversations and make things interesting. I guess it depends on what the troll is doing.

My experience is that hey are big Homers to one team (like New England Patriots or something) and it was fun shooting down everything he said.
