The US has been talking about forgiving student loans. Are you for or against this and why?

I just saw a post from a friend on FB who wants her student loans forgiven because she will never be able to pay them off...but she goes to Disney World every couple of months (not exaggerating!).

I’m for student loan forgiveness, but only because it would benefit me. 😛 I’ve got plenty of student loans I’d love to get rid of. I haven’t made a payment ever since they passed the payment freeze on them. At the end of the day, all of this money comes from somewhere. If my student loans are forgiven, I’m sure I’ll be paying for it in some other way down the line. Pretty much how I feel about all of these stimulus checks as well.

You're right! My daughter said she wants her student loan forgiven but thinks that the ultra rich are going to pay for it. That's not exactly what will happen because they pay guys to get them out of paying taxes so it's up to the middle class to cover it then. That means your mom, dad, aunts, uncles...all those people who didn't sign your promissory note are left paying for it. That's what my daughter didn't understand and I hope she does now. She agreed to sign that note, I did not. She needs to have some personal responsibility which is why I didn't fully pay for her college in the first place! We paid for most of it and I even worked just to help cover the cost but I wanted her to have a financial obligation so she could learn about priorities and Biden promises her no burdens so she'll go that route. It's frustrating.

I think there should be student loan forgiveness. A lot of young adults go to college not knowing what career path they need and they get into a lot of debt that they can't pay back because they can't get a job for what they went to school for. My ex wife went to school for Coding and Billing in the Medical field. No company would hire her because she didn't have any "experience". As a result. She racked up almost 18 thousand dollars of student loans.

IF a college promised a job then there might be something to it. But no one is promised employment because they borrowed to earn a degree in order to try to get a job. It's a risk that everyone has to take and unfortunately that's life! It's not the "government" paying for that forgiveness, it's we the people (who pay taxes) taking up the slack of those who agreed to sign a promissory note and then decide they don't want to pay it back because it's too hard to get a job. But a lot of those people I know who want their loans paid have a better cell phone than I do, and go on more vacations than I do. I don't like the idea that my taxes have to go for their irresponsibility.

You make a valid point. Thinking about it now. I made the wrong comment. I think if you can't afford to go college. Then you shouldn't and getting a student loan is a bad idea if you can't pay it back.

I worked tirelessly to pay on my ex wife's college loans as well as my kids, my car loan that I paid off, rent, and other necessities. My ex wife worked a total of one year out of the marriage. She used our tax refunds and barely paid anything on them let alone my hospital bills that she lied about.

After thinking more into this. I don't want to pay for anyone's college bills. That was stressful the first time I had to do it.

You're being too nice to your ex who should be the one to take personal responsibility and repay her own debts. Unless you signed the promissory note? I refused to sign any of my daughter's promissory notes but I worked to help pay for her college so she wouldn't incur too much debt.

I'm all for trade schools and especially now. With trade schools you're done sooner and it's much easier to get a job in the field.

I also think that colleges should have better job placement centers. I went to art school (an accredited college) and when I graduated, I got multiple phone calls to apply for jobs and that's how I got into the advertising/marketing business many moons ago. Without that job placement I probably wouldn't have gotten my foot in the door.

I didn't sign anything. I felt morally obligated because we had kids. So I felt like I had to help her pay on them. Which I did. My name wasn't on any of her college debts.

I haven't crossed that bridge with own kids yet. They're 9 and 10. I imagine they'll have to get scholarships and grants to get through college. Unless my rich grandparents have a college fund set up for them.

I started working as soon as I got out of high school and never went to college. My parents were disappointed that I decided against it. I just kept thinking, "go with what money?" and even if I had the money, I doubt I'm mentally and academically able to get through college. I just didn't have it in me to go. Still don't.

I agree. I think since people are borrowing or paying all of that money. Then the colleges should help them find a business to put those degrees to a good use.

I am all for it 100%, went back to school when I turned 43 and got a degree. I only wish they would also do Parent Plus loans as well.

Too much free stuff builds bad character. At the least, money given for college free should have tougher rules on it - like the promise of a career.

Well, people working for anything are going to appreciate it more. People with stuff for free are libel to not take it seriously,

I agree with this whole heartedly.
