You are aware Google frowns upon and smites automated submissions, right?

How are they supposed to find out?

If you just submit the same thing as "Online Something Forum" and the URL http://www.mydomain.com to XXXX different engines, directories, etc., they'll know. You have to be stupid to fool Mother Google.

I'm with Canadiano on this one, google only ranks you from relevant sites, so if you are say a gaming forum, and you have links from a health spa, it will ignore that link, too many irrelevant links can lower a page rank not increase it.

It's just risky. Watch out, cause it fits in Black Hat SEO (it's a term for illegally taking advantage of Google's flaws in risk of penalties later).

Besides, I HIGHLY doubt it'd change PageRank, especially considering you have to White-Hat to get a good PageRank (the legal stuff) and the fact that there are strong rumours going around that PageRank is actually getting replaced.

I'm a bit lost now. Is this worth doing or not?

I've taken this from Googles own advice on choosing an SEO ( Search Engine Optimiser) company

# You should never have to link to an SEO.

Avoid SEOs that talk about the power of "free-for-all" links, link popularity schemes, or submitting your site to thousands of search engines. These are typically useless exercises that don't affect your ranking in the results of the major search engines -- at least, not in a way you would likely consider to be positive.

Here is the link to the whole article :
http://www.google.com/support/webmasters/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=35291

You may have to sign up as webmaster to read it though, one other word, all the advice on google is free, and it's about how to get a good ranking on google, and it wont cost a penny, you can also be sure that that what you read is right.

So I guess the real question here is, is it worth it or not? Has anybody actually seen an increase of traffic from using this? Page rank drop? What if you don't have a Page Rank to begin with? Then how will it affect you negatively? I'm trying to drum up some business (memberships) but as it is, I have no rank, so I really shouldn't have anything to lose right?

i havent seen any traffic from it but it cant hurt they get googled dont they
