Hi everyone,

I am working on a coding forum that will be based off of the web coding languages like html/css/php. I am really looking to have some uniqueness so what ideas do you have?

I will donate 30 FP to everyone who gives me a decent idea for the forum! 🙂.

Have some sort of point system and offer development or style creation services for points, 😉
Have members earn points by posting.

Thanks for your suggestion, Marc!

I am leaning more towards a help / learning forum rather then get stuff made, but I'll keep your idea in consideration! FP donated.

What do you guys think: Should I have a section for each big language, like one for HTML and one for CSS and one for PHP, or have broader categories like "Client-Sided Development" and use thread prefixes to keep things organized?

CSS and HTML aren't programming languages, so I would keep those under Web Development, then you can have server side or client side development, but I would rather just have Programming.

I understand that, but I said languages, which would include markup languages such as HTML. 🙂.

I'm leaning more towards the broader categories including more than one language.

Structure of this site is going to be key and I would ensure you have the various sections broken up by level of understanding and have the tutorial progress in sequence so members learn and build confidence in their ability.

You can code themes for members for money or forum cash etc.

This is absolutely true. Do you think you could go more in-depth on how you think it should be structured? I have a few ideas but I'd like to hear from other people as well. Thanks a bunch! 🙂

Kind of what Marc said, I probably won't end up doing that.

This is what I had when I was playing around on Zetaboards making a coding forum for fun 😛

First you would have your main forums - News, introductions ect...

Development
Showcase Your Work
Resources
Programming Discussion

Script Discussion
Forum
Blog & CMS
Other Script Discussion

Then I did have areas for all other types of coding (HTML, CSS, .NET, PHP, MSQL, ect...)

GAF - Thank you for your wonderful suggestions!

I'd love to have sections for all types of coding, but I just feel like I'll have to many sub-forums for a new forum (and I currently have no other staff besides myself).

I do like the script discussion ideas, I'll probably use that.

Also, on your website you can have a section which teaches users how to code and a forum for people to ask questions. This can attract many people who wants to learn how to code.

Yeah I was thinking that. Too many areas to be empty.

You should have a database of codes and scripts people can submit so others than use them 😉

You could have competitions where the members have a chance to code a feature for the forum, submit it, and then everyone votes on it. The winner then gets their plugin/feature added to the forum.

@ ZINC - Cool! I like that idea, but I probably wouldn't expand on it until I got the site going a bit.

@ White Panda - That's a cool idea for a contest... I'm going to keep that in mind! 🙂. FP Sent to both of you.

I have wrote up a "rough layout" of how I want the forums to be organized. What do you guys think should be changed/added/removed? Really looking for suggestions & help on this!

Not a bad layout but the trick to being successful is having a creative and unique layout and style to the forum. And by style to the forum I don't necessarily mean design/theme. Just test things out and see what happens. Best thing to do is get a basic layout done, then get a decent size member base and let them choose how them want it. After all it's them that'll be using it.
