It’s just starting to feel like winter here, and you can really notice the shift.

In places like the US and UK, people often talk about the contrast between hot, long summers and cold, dark winters — but down here in New Zealand, it can feel even more layered depending on where you are.

The South Island especially really leans into winter. With all the mountains and alpine areas, the cold doesn’t just come and go — it settles in. Snow builds up on the peaks and higher ground, even if it doesn’t always reach where people live. Where I am, we don’t necessarily get snow in town, but you can always see it sitting on the mountains in the distance, which still makes it feel very much like winter is right there.

Then summer flips everything — long days, warmer nights, and a much more outdoor, relaxed vibe.

So what do people prefer more where you are — the cosy, quiet feel of winter, or the energy and freedom of summer?

Winter!

I hate summer I love winter though since I love the cold. I don't like the heat, even as a kid I would stay inside during the day while on summer vacation. I would go outside after the sun would set, my friends and cousin would do the same thing lol.

I would say neither. I'm a Karen over the heat and the cold 😂

Even worse for Winter that we're so close to Antarctica.

I’m definitely more of a winter person. I hate those long stretches of hot weather where you just can’t cool yourself down properly. Everything feels sticky, stuffy, and uncomfortable, flies and insects are everywhere, smoke and heat just hang in the air, and people are sweating out of their nuts the second they step outside. After a while it just becomes exhausting rather than enjoyable.

I’ve lived in the UK for around 12 years now after moving from Australia, so I’ve experienced both extremes of weather. Australia has that intense dry heat, brutal summer sun, and those days where it feels like the air itself is burning. Summers can feel relentless for months. The UK is obviously the complete opposite in many ways, cooler, windier, wetter, and darker through winter, but honestly I prefer it here weather-wise.

Most people complain about the cold, rain, and gloomy skies in the UK, but I’d take that over extreme heat any day. At least in winter you can warm yourself up, throw on a hoodie, get cosy indoors, and actually breathe comfortably. I also love snow, which is something I never really experienced properly growing up in Australia. There’s just something better about cold winter mornings, frost on the ground, snow falling, and that whole calm atmosphere you get during winter. Hot weather just feels draining to me, while winter actually feels relaxing and comfortable.

I prefer autumn over the other season!

I chose summer. Simply because I HATE the constant cold. If fall were an option, I would’ve chosen that. I don’t want it to be extremely hot but I don’t want it to be cold either.

Winter. My part of California doesn't snow(but I live an hour away from where it gets up to 20 feet of snow on more precipitous years) but it does regularly get over 100F and sometimes 110F. Glad I don't live in southern Cali where it gets 125F.

Also I fix air conditioners so when it's hot I have to be up on a hot roof.

I'm probably going to have to choose winter.

I'm not running my AC all the time which causes me to have a high electric bill. During the summer, I cringe every time I have to open the next electric bill. I get hot easily and during the winter, I don't have to turn on the AC all the time to help keep me cool so I can sleep.

Winter is for me because a.) kids are in school and b.) summer in Texas is generally scorching hot.

Winter all the way. I hate summer because I get so sweaty and have to wash too often. Winter is not only better because of that but also I enjoy the sound of the snow crunching bellow my feet, how snowflakes fall over my face. Ahhh.
