Scenario:

Your hosting service suspends your account unexpectedly.

What's your recovery plan?

Honestly? I’d panic for about 30 seconds… then switch into fix mode. First check why billing, usage, TOS, whatever. If it’s something simple, fix it and contact support. At the same time, I’m thinking backups. If I’ve got off-site backups, I’m safe. If the host drags it out, I’d move fast new host, restore backup, update DNS, get back online.

After it’s sorted, I’d make sure I’m never relying on one host without proper backups again.

Stressful, yeah. But if you’ve got backups, you’re not finished.

I've been getting better at making backups, so I would just cancel the hosting and go with another one and hope they don't do the same thing. I think this is another good reason to backup your websites just in case, even if you personally don't do anything wrong to violate your hosting's terms of service, something could come up and ruin it for you.

Omg, every year the owner of the site I run gets our account suspended because he doesn't pay something on time 😉 That's when I go to Facebook and make a post so our members know it's not THEIR account.

I always took daily backups using a script, so it wouldn't be a problem either way.

I had a web host make a billing error with my VPS and accidentally delete my server. I requested a credit based on some downtime that was an issue on their end, and they credited my account an extra week or two for free. Unfortunately it was right at the beginning of the new year, and they accidentally typed in the previous year when they were updating my billing date on my account. Then when whatever cron entry was ran with WHMCS at midnight, my server was automatically deleted.

At the time, I did not have an automatic backup system in place, and it was a mess. I learned my lesson there. Take daily backups. Even if you're on shared hosting, don't assume your host is doing it for you.
