I don't allow swearing on my forum simply because I don't think it looks nice on a forum about spirituality.

I've spent up to five years in other forums where it is ok to swear and even actively promoted in certain music/band forums.
What are your thoughts, do you allow swearing on your forum, do you think it's ok, or unnecessary, we can all slip up but if it was f this and f that in every single post would it be too much for you or not or would it depend completely on your forum type?

I swear sometimes and swearing doesn't bother me on the whole so please don't think i'm just being narrow minded

I don't mind it. Sometimes someone annoys me so much I swear, lock the topic and then trash it.

in our forums we don't mind it, it's the whole idea of the site...NeThinGoes. We don't want our users to feel that we're they're internet mum's and dads lol. However we don't in any way tolerate racism etc 🙂

I don't have a problem with it. You have to be 13 to register on a forum and by that age people will know all the swear words and the majority I'm sure swear in real life, including myself.

Swearing is fine for me - as long as its used in expression and not AT anybody which thankfully has never happened.

I allow as its not directed towards a member The only thing I dont allow is Racism Or Porn....

never allowed on my forums, and it never will be.
i want my forums sqeaky clean, and i dont like swearing online.

Completely depends.

Link Typhoon :: Swearing should be used rarely. You can get a point across without the need for it well enough.

Blue Humor :: Why the fuck would we censor it eh?Say whatever, it's not like we care (free speech as much as legally possible).

I think swearing on any forums is..very unnecessary its immature,childish...It should not be on any forums..people think sometimes swearing is awsome, cool, etc and its very stupid it just makes a forum have some bad reputation to other children ages 12-14 who may join your forums..and parents see that? They go like.., "O my GOD! Get off that forums they swear to much" or something..so its very unnecessary to me..

Considering the fact that my forum is geared toward mature individuals, and users 13 and over (as the law requires) I don't have any rules in place barring swearing. The only rule I have is that it should be kept to a minimum, and that it not be directed at another person. I do agree, however, that swearing for the sake of is unnecessary and childish.

What I do find childiish is that some admins censor words that aren't even dirty to begin with. Such as the biological names for reproductive organs, as well as words such as sex, lesbian, homosexual, porn etc.. and words that they don't like in general, such as atheist, rape, etc.. I have been on forums where there were serious topics started about these subjects, and sometimes, those filters undermine the tone of a persons' post.. especially if those filters sound like they came straight off of Barney.

It depends on the degree of swearing. If it's words like 'damn', 'bloody', etc, then I don't mind it. I also don't mind euphemisms like 'peeved' and 'freaking'.

But I don't like having 'full-on' swearing. If they do the censor (@&$@&$) type thing, then I can be a little more lenient.

Though if you can get the point across without swearing, then it's best to take that decision. Oh, and of course, any poor language directed at a member is a no-go at my forum.

That's me as well. When I had another forum we had members of all ages it seemed like and I didn't want any swearing happening in case there were sensitive members other than myself on there.

On my forum i allow people to say what they like. Swearing has never been an issue for me

Actually, I take that back on the swearing. If and when I ever get up to it, I will be creating a staff lounge when we start getting more staff members, and I will allow swearing only in that forum, as long as it's not directed towards anyone in particular.

I'm mostly alright with it, just to a certain degree. For instance, if a member was to say the 'n' word, the 'f' word, or make a swear directed at a specific member, then that's not tolerated.

Otherwise I have no problem with it.

hmmm interesting and varied responses, thanks guys, I think i'll stick to my guns though 🙂 As I say it looks out of place on the type of forum I have

Like you said, the theme of the forum depends greatly on the way the rules will be placed. If you have a gaming forum for example, you tend to care less. However, if you have a forum that is about a more serious topic, it may be frowned upon.
