What are your rules on swearing on your forum? Personally I don't see any issue with people swearing on forum in particularly providing it isn't aimed at another member... having rules against swearing basically means you are not allowing people to express themselves properly in certain situations IMO.

I agree with you, and as long as it isn't excessive than I usually don't care 😛 I often swear myself and use it in roleplays too.

Yeah I agree, also I can understand people having rules against swearing on forums like Christian forums because Christians can find swearing offensive.

I wouldn't say people have to swear to express themselves properly. There are plenty of other ways to say you don't like something without having to use derogatory words.

Unfortunately nowadays people consider swearing as part of the every day English language ~neutral~ On my forums I have always added word filters on swear words because as you mentioned, it is offensive to some people.

I allow it to a certain extent but I will add a filter on some swear words soon just to try keep most members happy.

I allow members to choose if they want word filters on or not. Mine is off, and most off my member's filters are off.

I'm Christian, I don't have a problem with it -razz-

If someone has an issue with them on BlueHumor.org, I simply state to them, "It's just words. Words don't have any affect on physical objects such as yourself. If you don not like them, to be frank, we rather have you leave the board than for us to change."

My forum is aimed at teenagers though, and it it part of everyday talk. No different from what I hear at school. My forum is a place for them to relax and have a laugh, if curse words make them feel more 'at home' then they should be allowed.

An another note, i'm not sure why you singled out the Christian group. Almost all religions preach that swearing is wrong, but in the end it's up to the user to decide how to run their life.

Short version;
Yep, they're 100% allowed on my forum. Don't like them? Get off the site.

Well if someone rants if there are rules against swearing they probably wouldn't be able to express their feelings as strongly as they would like to

@Ghost... well Britain is a Christian country, and I know some people who are Christians and they don't swear. Though they don't really mind other people swearing too much to be honest but still, some people will be offended by swearing.

Also clean jokes are usually crap so allowing swearing is definitely a good thing for your site. 😉

Excessive swear words will get recognized by the filter at my work and then the site will get blocked. -lol-

Swearing isn't very good manners and a lot of members on forums are under the age of 16 so I'm sure some of their parents don't want them exposed to that, if they found out they might forbid the child from returning to said forum due to all the vulgar language going on.

People on the forums though will know all the swear words though... plus unless their parents were control freaks they wouldn't stop them visiting 😉

May I ask, have you been to the website known as "YouTube" recently? I don't see swearing as having an effect on my target userbase at all. If it does, allowing swearing is most likely a positive thing in my case.

Teenagers tend to rebel, this has always been known. One of the ways is through swearing, even though they may not pickup on the reason why they do it. If their parents are control freaks, 9 times out of 10 they are still accessing sites without their parents knowedge -😉-

This made me think some though, thanks for the ideas Theezy.

I wouldn't call parents who don't want their children exposed to vulgar language control freaks. A parent has every right to keep their child away from things like swearing, pornography, and other things like that if they choose to. I would call them a good parent for trying to instill some sort of values in their child instead. Most parents nowadays don't care about their children and let them do whatever the hell they want on the computer and let them sit on the computer all day instead of getting of their lazy butt and actually spending time with their child. 😉

Anyways, I swear a lot in real life, its part of my regular vocabulary. However I will not just start doing it in front of strangers or people I know who don't appreciate that sort of language being used in front of them. Same goes for forums, out of respect for everyone, its best to try not to do it in public forums you never know who will be looking and/or might get offended. However if its in a private forum where I know everyone is fine with it, I will curse up a storm. -8)-

I would consider them control freaks because they would be giving their children no privacy if they looked through their childrens internet history, then read the posts on a forum and then stop them visiting the site probably, that's unlikely though.

How are they control freaks? They might not want their children reading stuff with swear words in. What kind of parent are you if you don't care what your children are up to?

Anyway, I allow it to a certain extent. Most words are blocked by the filter anyway.

What's wrong with seeing swear words at the age of 13 which is the age you can legally sign up for forums? Plus the most successful/biggest forums out there have very laid back rules.

I'm a laid back guy, and when I have kids i'll watch what they look up online. That's the geek in me though, and i'd probably do it simply for a legal escuse to use keyloggers -razz-

If I found my 13 year old kid looking at porn material, i'd have a talk with them but i'd leave it up to them. Curse words, when used correctly, are fine. There are times to use them and times not to, as long as your child understands this they should be allowed to use them.

If a 17 year old kid first hears of a curse word at school from a friend, then uses it at a wrong time (such as a family dinner) then it is completely the parent's fault.

That might be your way of thinking but your not a parent and even if you was it doesn't mean other people think the same. Some people might not want their children to be reading swearwords, it doesn't mean it is wrong.

13= teenager, not child

Sorry to be a smart-arse -lol-

Back to the original point, IMO looking through your childrens browsing history is being a control freak, not giving your children any privacy.

It's not "wrong" as each parent has their own style. However, from everything I have ever found (I really should look into doing a study on this for class credit) is that children exposed and talked to about swearing, porn, ect are less likely to use it at the wrong time. Like I said, a child who has never known the meaning of a swear word might not know it's a swear word. This could cause them to use it out of place, in a setting that it shouldn't be, like school.

Each parent to his / her own I suppose.
