Exactly. Policies that list no swearing are to subjective unless you want to define every word not allowed under this policy. I am perfectly able to swear without ever once mentioning one of the go to swear words people think of. With such subjective policy, one opens themselves up to trial by fires from individuals who like pushing boundaries (like me.). In the long run, you either get a public perception of being to heavy handed as a staff or not involved enough. It’s better to define policy against directing remarks towards other members/orientations/groups/ethnicities/etc. This line of policy would allow someone to moderate without having to worry about subjectivity if the intention can be easily described.
My view is that we aren't children anymore, so I see little problem with it as long as it doesn't become a problem.
I actually put in the rules something like "No excessive swearing. The odd f bomb is fine here and there. Use common sense." Or something to that effect. It's not a Disney forum, and the majority of the members are in their 30s and beyond. You do get the odd young one joining and swearing all over the place, then it's time for the "smitehammer" aka warning. LOL! I find that there's very little need to reprimand people normally though.
I think swearing or cursing should be used sparingly. Here's how I see it. I don't curse or use profanity around my mother or family. So why do it around other people who may feel the same way as my parents?
