Recently someone suggested that I convert my forum from phpBB3 to vBulletin. Can anyone explain to me what the advantages of doing this are?

vBulletin has many more features than phpBB, looks much more professional and is much more user friendly from a User's / Moderator's point of view. The styles are also much nicer for vBulletin than phpBB and the MODs are more effective.

Only disadvantage is the fact you have to pay. Mind you - it's worth it. ~wink~

Thanks for the information. I will consider switching once I am able to pay the $180 for a licence.

They use an upload system similar to SMF, where you download the MOD and it contains and xml file. You upload the full zipped MOD and it installs by itself, using the xml file. Its nice if it's a big MOD and you don't have 4 hours to manually install it.

Thanks for the information, the MOD installation process seems much easier on vBulletin. SOme phpBB mods like the reputation one take ages to install.

With vb you do need alot of forum experience to run it as it is alot more difficult and confusing then phpBB3.

Also with it being full of features and so on it can be quite "heavy" on the server compared to other forum software about.

I hadn't thought about it being heavier on the server, I suppose it would be better to buy paid hosting first, then consider switching softwares.

Paid hosting would be better as if the server is slow (like alot of free hosts) just running phpBB then it will be even slower running vb.

I just moved to vbulletin from zetaboard. I must say it's really worth it. There are alot of features for to you add.

Yes. Managing vbulletin can be alittle confusing if it's your first forum. But you will get used to it like i am. 😀

If there were a conversion i could do, move my forum to vB, i would defenitely make the move. i've got the money, i just can't bail out on what my members and staff, as well as i , have worked so hard on over the last 6 months.

good luck with the move.

I have

Proboards/Invisionfree/ActiveBoards converters --> PhpBB3

🙂

(download attachment)

The ProBoards one didnt come with the download, unless its named something different. I disagree with what alot of people on here are saying, I wouldnt switch to vB if I could. I plan to stick with phpBB3 until I have the money to switch to IPB, which I like better than vB.

Switching to vBulletin would be a wise thing to do. However, it costs a heck of a lot and you need to get familliar with vBulletin!
