Hey guys, I want your opinions.

I've been really interested in possibly investing in a convertible for school (no, not the car, but the tablet/ultrabook convertibles). The whole idea behind them is that I would be using them almost strictly for productivity reasons in classes and then for little side things. Although the ability to use Photoshop directly on these would be awesome. They have the ability to be used like a laptop, but also have the ability to be a tablet. I could use the laptop feature to quickly type and perform projects, etc., while I would use the tablet feature to handwrite notes from classes. Also, I could possibly use the tablet combined with Microsoft Word/OneNote to complete worksheets by hand. It could also use online textbooks, possibly.

It's a bit idealistic, but it is something I have sold myself into. The problem is I am looking at all of the devices that would work for what I'm looking at: (chances are you may or may not of heard of these, do a web search and check them out, I included Best Buy/Newegg links, but they may not do justice. They are all pretty cool)
Microsoft Surface Pro - $899/999 + $130 for keyboard
Lenovo Yoga 13 - $999+
Asus Taichi - $1,099+
Sony Vaio Duo 11 - $1,199+
Acer Iconia - $849+
Toshiba Satellite -$999+
Samsung ATIV - Varies

That's the lot of them.

For those of you who are familiar with any of these products, what are your thoughts on them? And for those of you not, what do you think of these products? And for all, which of the above are your favorites?

Chances are I will buy one of the above, fyi.

I like the Surface Pro because if you have any problems with it, you can walk into a local Microsoft Store if there is one in your town, and ask for help from the staff at the Microsoft store.

The Surface Pro also comes with Office 2013, and most Windows 8 Apps from the Windows 8 App store will most likely be compatible with the Surface Pro because the Surface Pro is one of the most popular W8 tablets.

I think you can use your own Bluetooth or USB keyboard and mouse, and save money since $130 for a Surface Pro keyboard is expensive.

I'd probably use their keyboard because it is ultraportable and sleek. 😉

I'm thinking that or the Yoga, personally.

The Taichi is really nice, but I'd be afraid of cracking the out-facing screen. Personally played with a Yoga and Surface Pro. I would have to give the nod to the Yoga.

Does the design to the Yoga seem awkard to you? I feel like it would be weird typing with the keyboard facing the surface (no pun intended) I have my device against.

Just an update on this, I looked at all of the models. I really enjoyed the surface. I am also looking at the Samsung one, and possibly the Taichi. Those are probably my favorites in that exact order.

You know I am super iffy on these convertibles. I just fear that they are going to go away from making laptops and eventually desktops and just make these convertibles. I mean what is the difference between a laptop and one of those? Size maybe. But overall I would rather have a more stable laptop that I could do whatever I needed to. Have a mouse, keyboard, and an all together great encompassing system.

I agree that some of these are weird. The real reason why these interest me though is because I want a tablet that can operate easily like a laptop as well, no problem.

Have you thought about getting the Asus Transformer Prime which is a Google Android tablet with a optional keyboard dock?

Android has more tablet apps than the Windows 8 Store, and the Asus Transformer Prime cost around $400 or less if you buy it online.

q

I considered Android devices, but one of the primary motivating factors is the fact that the Windows 8 tablets offer Microsoft Office. :/
