I think it is possible that tablets with external USB or Bluetooth keyboards would be more popular than laptops with a non-removable keyboard in the future because buying a tablet and external USB or Bluetooth keyboard is sometimes cheaper, so more people can afford both a tablet, and a keyboard, but may not be able to afford a dedicated laptop which cost hundreds more sometimes.

I see a lot of Android tablets which come with USB keyboard cases sell for $50-150 on eBay, and at electronic stores.

Used Microsoft Windows Surface RT tablets which support USB Keyboards, and the cover keyboards can also be bought for $200 or less on eBay. Regular Windows 8 Tablets are also coming down in price like the Dell Venue Pro which can be bought for $199 or less sometimes.

There are also iPad users who use Bluetooth keyboards for typing on instead of the touchscreen.

Although they are cheaper and more affordable sometimes, if you need a laptop I wouldn't settle for a tablet with a keyboard, because a tablet isn't 100% as good as a laptop. It really depends what you need a laptop for whether or not you would get a tablet instead.

I think a used first generation Microsoft Surface Pro with Windows 8 which you can get for under $400 on eBay, or even cheaper $199-299 Windows 8 tablets by Acer, Dell, etc with the Intel Atom Bay trail CPU could be pretty good for people with basic needs like word processing, web surfing, and watching videos when they plug in a regular USB keyboard, and mouse which can be bought as a combo for $20 or less online.

Although, you may need to hook up a bigger monitor for doing tasks like watching movies, and reading long articles which is more enjoyable on a bigger screen.
