Many people talk about the places you should be promoting your forum, but few consider the people you should be targeting. Just think about who you want to post on your forum and find out where those people are hanging out. If you own a gamer's forum, it just makes sense that other games would be interested. Of course, there's more to consider than just niche when finding potential forum members.

Whenever you meet someone on a niche forum that is similar to yours, think carefully about whether or not they would be a good fit for your forum, before asking them to check out your site. Just because they're happily posting on a similar site, does not mean they would fit in with your community.

Does the potential member's personality fit with your forum?

That's what I'm having trouble with...

I'm trying to target users that are interested in discussing media related topics like movies, TV, etc.. It seems like it would be easy but I'm having real difficulty.

Finding the correct members for your forum is one of the hardest tasks, however it is so rewarding when it pays off.

Being that my forum is related to metal, my main sources of attracting new members are Facebook groups/pages, other metal forums, and certain forums with people into metal music.

The ideal people are people to me. Education, etiquette, humour, everyone has these in a measure, however small.
I think it pays off though to target colleges. Students share, they love to chat (generally) and are quite well informed & savvy on average.
