It would be against one's own free will. There are hundreds of millions who are educated enough to distinguish and acknowledge what is being said.

Anyway, an easy referendum would probably overturn the idea, as it would be a constitutional matter. Conscription has failed in Australia 2 times through referendums.
Conscription would easily pass Congress in the United States if there were even a small threat.
That's a load of sht. Since Vietnam there have been tons of threats, and the draft has rarely even been brought up.

If no one is willing to defend their country, they deserve none.
Some people just aren't willing to blindly murder any person whom the state says is an enemy.
You can be in the military and not have to kill anybody.

Luckily in America you can just say you're gay or some other BS and they can't let you in. Which is also a nice way to scam yourself free college 😀.
DADT was repealed recently. If you love and service men, you still should be allowed to love and service your country.

Yeah but tax cuts for wealthy still
Once again, I have to ask why somebody who worked hard their entire life has to pay higher taxes than somebody who did not. The government is punishing hard work. Less tax cuts for middle/upper class = less money in the economy.

With regard to your underlined statements, that BS about you making yourself unemployed doesn't mean anything. Most unemployed people are not lazy bums, sorry to tell you.
Somebody in my family works directly in the NYS Dept. of Labor and can vouch for the exact opposite. There ARE tons of people that get unemployment that genuinely need it, however there are also tons of people that work the system, never get caught, and certify for unemployment when they are in the hospital, visiting family, or even on cruises (yes, on cruises) etc. All the time they are on unemployment, they are supposed to be actively looking for a job and be available for work.

Should somebody be able to get money to go on cruises and not look for work?
Of course people will abuse it. However, does your family member say that no one should be able to get them because there are some lazy people that take advantage? Should we just shut it down? I'm all for making sure that people who use the benefits are actually pursuing work and trying their best to get a job, but then again, how do you realistically police that? How do I prove that you aren't reading the classifieds every morning looking for a job and just haven't found one that suits you yet? (suits as in, you don't have the credentials for any of the jobs that you looked at, not as in you don't feel like becoming a plumber or w/e)

And no, it does not boost the economy. Just look at this link : http://www.cbpp.org/cms/index.cfm?fa=view&id=3241#_ftn2

According to the CBO, extending tax cut is the LEAST effective way to help the economy, and it says specifically, though they may give some short term help, in the long term, it will cause diminishing effects on the economy.

It shows a citation to the actual full CBO report at the bottom for you to examine if you don't believe the site.
Will look into that.
ok

People on unemployment benefits are supposed to have a written record of a job search, along with interviews and phone calls they have made. Of course it could all be made up, but the local offices are allowed to call to verify potential employers.

Isn't it possible that the real problem is that the local offices aren't doing their jobs, then? I mean, of course they can't call every single employer, but they could try calling to verify that the people who have been on unemployment for a very long time are actively seeking employment.

Please try to bring the original post into the argument, it's starting to veer off a little 😉

Right now a lot of the local offices have been inundated with work, due to the number of people on unemployment, the lack of employees at the local offices, and cuts in state funding. Thus, there is little, if any, time to check up on the people on unemployment. The Labor Standards department (the department that enforces child labor, employers giving breaks to employees, safe work places) has around a 2 year backlog.

Cuts to state funding is for sure a big reason behind it not working properly... I know for a fact that working in a state hospital, the amount of funding they give is terrible. And the hospitals are the least cut, so I cant even imagine what happened at the labor departments. The state needs to stop wasting money on the DEC. They pulled over my dad, myself, and my uncle while we were fishing in a local bay area. My uncle is a retired federal agent and just retired a few months ago as one of the assistant directors of ICE and even he had no idea that these DEC agents had the right to carry firearms and patrol harbors for people fishing. Now that, is a waste of state money.

Completely agree. I could understand a need for DEC in Alaska or other similar states, but NY does not need that much. We'll see what Cuomo does...

Re: National Service

I know you can't even walk on a beach near me because they are closed by the DEC for the conservation of the "pipping plover" population.

Sorry thread was split from another debate that went off topic

I think the tax system in the US is way too complex.
I have made a more detailed post on my blog ,but I think the tax code should be simplified with one simple rate, simple rules and guidelines.

You can't charge everyone the same, that simply wouldn't be fair. Charge like 10% and the government has no money or charge 25% and then the low earners don't have enough money for their basic needs. You lose either way

There has to be a middle ground somewhere. The current tax system is way too complex and painful for all involved.
By the way, I would appreciate if comments are also posted on my blog 🙂

It's easy. Cut unneeded programs, the government is WAY too big as it is. There should be NO income taxes, you should be taxed off of what you consume, not how hard you work or what you work for. Sure you'll pay 23 cents on the dollar when you buy a coke, but you would have been taxed hundreds less on your pay check, so YOU, the consumer determine where to spend more of your money. In the end, the government gets it anyway. And for those of you that think it's not fair the wealthy don't have to pay a lot, they'll still pay a lot more, because they consume more, and they drive job creation more than anyone, not only with their investing, but with their purchasing.

I don't get how it's not fair to charge a flat rate? The wealthy pay the majority of America's taxes as it is right now, while the lower income earners sometimes don't pay taxes at all. Sure they pay it on their income checks, but they receive it back at the end of the year.
