I'm looking for opinion on this matter.

My forum community is clearly only going to be a community and won't be able to expand further. It occurs to be that a union between a non-forum related site and my forum (in the same niche) would benefit both sites and would create a good political balance.

Has anyone ever done this and how did you go about contacting the other site? I'm a bit reluctant to start just asking random sites and I'm not sure how high up I should go.

My advice would be to make sure both sites benefit as equally as possible, and that one site isn't carrying the other. You both need to benefit or the one that's not benefitting and "carrying" the other site won't want to keep going with the partnership and it won't last.

If you have can find a way to mutually help each other out, then I don't see a problem with partnering with a political blog if you can find a decent one that is willing to.

I can share my experience.

I run a Motorcycle Forum focused on group rides. I wanted to make it more popular and offered a big club on meetup.com to organise some rides for them. In exchange I could promote the forum.

Few months later and lots of work involved I pumped lots of energy to that club and my forum was almost dead.

I've learnt a lot and met some amazing people. However I focus more on my forum now. I've also learnt that facebook needs to be used wisely because if all information are on FB there is no need to check the forum.

It can be beneficial but it needs to be done wisely IMHO.
