The rise of big technology throughout Texas means crypto mining facilitiesthat demand power and generate noise, and it means enormous data centers that consume megawatts by the hundreds and thousands.
Arguably the most impactful tech plan happening in the Lone Star State is part of the $500 billion Stargate Project, which comes from leaders of OpenAI, Oracle Corp. and SoftBank, has been endorsed by President Donald Trump, and is considered an investment to build out U.S. intelligence infrastructure.
The first step for Stargate is filling out a $100 billion data center in the West Texas city of Abilene. According to a Bloomberg report, the work to get that data center up and running will begin in months, with OpenAI and Oracle placing tens of thousands of powerful semiconductors into the facility about 150 miles west of Fort Worth. Specifically, Bloomberg reports through an anonymous source that 64,000 of Nvidia Corp.'s GB200 semiconductors will be added to the data center's hallways, with 16,000 going in first over the summer. The work is supposed to be finished by the end of 2026.
To put these numbers into perspective, one GB200 semiconductor has been estimated to cost between $60,000 and $70,000. While Nvidia hasn't provided details regarding the GB200's power draw, reports estimate each chip may use somewhere around2,700 watts (W) of energy.

The new data center is reportedly proposed to be on 875 acres but will allegedly have only 57 full-time employees. Oracle, which reportedly will operate the supercomputer at the data center site, is already in the area and leasing a 200-megawatt (MW) facility in Abilene. The supercomputer at the new Abilene data center would be used to boost AI capabilities in the U.S. Trump has said the Stargate Project would create more than 100,000 U.S. jobs.
While Trump has endorsed the Stargate Project, billionaire Elon Musk has been doubtful about its future, publicly speaking out about an alleged lack of funding in January. Musk has largely been in lockstep with Trump, as the SpaceX and Tesla CEO also heads the president's Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
Bloomberg reports officials from OpenAI and SoftBank have also looked into Oregon, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin as additional potential Stargate data center sites.
