This is something I've been doing for I dunno, maybe a few years now, which I'm kind of surprised XenForo doesn't do. It seems to have a lot of comments strewn around which is only useful to a designer and even leaks sensitive information like version numbers which could be used by an adversary to narrow down potential exploits to a small set.
Superfluous lines are also well-handled by one. Minifying templates prior to render means that you don't need to waste cycles, bandwidth, etc. on something that is ultimately going to be useless 99% of the time.
