Hosting and Domains aren't the same, but I think you know that. Are you asking for a sub-domain, hosting, or both?

It would make more sense to purchase your domain first so that some of your content is indexed. You also don't want to have to fix links.

I remember there being free subdomains you can get, can't remember where you can get them, I used it with DynDNS many years ago for a private Minecraft server.

You can use a free host that offers using their free domain until you're ready to use your own domain. That way everything is ready to go and the only thing you need to change is your domain.
