The Battle of Board Softwares

Ooh, that's not good. According to Forum-Software.org, Xenforo doesn't have database backup.

But, I guess all these forum softwares have something good about them, in a way...

What is wrong with using phpmyadmin to take a backup?

Never choose a software that does not let you make a backup of your board. If you are really in this for long term, why put all that work & effort for nothing. I learned this the hard way since I ran my board using Proboards until October of last year.

I love phpBB3. So versatile and very custom-able once you learn the basics.

As for the cost of hosting, you can pick a great host and use their smallest package for very little. I'm using stablehost that was recommended to me on webhostingtalk.com since I had no clue. At the time they were running a 50% off coupon and I purchase their 2nd package, at $5.95, it was less than the $7 I was paying Proboards for adfree. Anyway, I paid the entire year in advanced and using the coupon, it costed $35.70 for the year! 😀 It's been almost a year now and I'm completely satisfy. Anyway, their small package is $3.95 and they are running a 40% off (not as good as the 50% but still OK). So yearly price is $47.40 and if you apply the coupon, it will be just $28.44!

The awkward moment when not one person says MyBB.
Right before I come on and say MyBB.

viewtopic.php?f=26&t=42455 also where did this topic go :U

I've been on MyBB for awhile, and like it. PhpBB is also a good software. And IPB would probably be the best paid software, although I'm not too up-to-date on these things. ZetaBoards is good, but only for those that can't pay for hosting and a domain.

I'm here. 😀

I love MyBB. :cheer:

Well i like some Forum softwares and the rest i hate.

I Like:
1) MyBB: 😀
Never had any issues with it. Its the perfect peace of software.

2) Xenforo:
Its the second script i like after MyBB. If i would ever want to move from MyBB, Xenforo would be my choice.

3) IPB:
Their consistency is good, unlike VB. That's their best part.

4) Woltlab Burning Board:
Not so advance as MyBB, Xenforo or IPB. But this one really got potential.

I hate:
I hate almost all other Forum softwares.

1) phpBB:
Their Mod installation and upgrading is a mess. And please don't say you learn PHP better by those code edits. Most of the time, you just copy and paste the codes as instructed by plugin author, and don't actually study them.

2) SMF:
Their software is good, but their development cycle is really slow. If they speed it up, they will be in "I like" list.

3) VB:
As previously said by someone in this topic, their 3.8 series used to be good, but by VB4, they simply went down.

Ehh, I don't really *hate* any software. I am kind of picky about little things though since there's not much difference. But...well, I really don't mind those little things. Kind of strange.

xenForo is the way to go if you have the money to pay for a premium software.

MyBB is the best free forum software in my opinion. Go with phpBB with you have hours of time to make file edits, even for the simplest of add-ons. MyBB is just basically Upload > Activate/Install > Start Using!

I use zetaboards and am very happy. But if you'd like to pay I would go with vBulliten. It's the only paid software I really liked. 🙂

UltraBB 1.17. Easy to use software and way cheaper then Vbulletin. And the support is awesome. They normally respond within 1 day or less.

I would second the vote for UltraBB. I have a pretty big forum and UltraBB has been far and away the best forum solution for us (and I have used all the others, including paid VB, etc)

And the coming upgrade, expected sometime towards the end of this year, will put UltraBB on par, or far ahead, of other forum options.

Great support and in house hosting options also available guaranteeing virtually no down time and fast responses to any issues.

Just my humble opinion
