Okay, I bet a bunch of people see the title of this thread and instantly know exactly what i'm talking about. Yep, I get a pain in my chest every time I hear the word or the sound.

For those who DON'T know, the click of death is the sound your hard drive sometimes makes while it is dying. It can be a little tap tap tap, or a CLONK CLONK CLONK (I would assume the clonking is much worse), even a BING tap tap. Yeah. I've heard them all.... But what I didn't want to hear was it coming from MY LAPTOP!

Several weeks ago I heard it while sitting in my chair.. Three little taps, tap tap tap. That's it, that's all, no more. To most that would mean, huh what was that noise? and look around some... To me? BACK UP EVERYTHING NOW NOW NOW NOW NOW THE COMPUTER IS DYING. I really did over react. I freaked out to say the least. I backed everything up two or three times. I then began saving money to buy a new laptop. I didn't hear the noise for several more weeks... and I assumed I had hallucinated the first time. Well, I ordered a laptop anyways. I decided I'd give mother mine and if the HDD did die, I had a crappy backup one that would work for her, but was too small for my needs (Which my dad told me, "Oh I dropped that hard drive. No clue if it works anymore." Thanks, dad. Thanks.)

Anyways, so the laptop is supposedly supposed to be shipped, although UPS says it isn't. Ugh, a wait... I just heard the sounds again, literally five or so minutes ago from writing this. It went like this, tap tap, tap tap, tap tap. Six taps in groups of two. Hm, funny how your brain memorizes things so clearly. It's like a fear.

So let's talk about these clicks. Ever heard them? Any bets on how long this hard drive lasts? I give it a week. Hopefully it won't die, but if it does, I'm prepared. Somewhat... I've got backup desktops and a tablet anyways, I just like my lappie the best.

I have never heard that noise before, and my laptop is three years old in April. I think I may have heard it when putting CDs into the tray when they load up, but as far as I'm aware that's the only time it really happens, and I don't put CDs in the tray too often... so it's hard to say what it could be.

If there's ever a click it's time to backup and replace. Why didn't you just get a new HDD instead of a whole laptop? Or is the whole computer already aging?

The whole computer is old. I the battery is dead, and I need an upgrade for my work and college. Mother doesn't have a laptop and I have a spare, very small, laptop drive that will work for her. She gets an laptop, I get an upgrade. All works out! 🙂

and yeah, I've backed the computer up three times. I I have a minor stress attack when I hear the clicks

Well, I'm sure that'll help both of you out. You both get new computers so that's a plus!

Usually within a few days of the clicking the hard drive becomes defective.

I honestly have not heard clicking from a hard drive before.
I have heard some loud noises form hard drives when they are old and are being accessed, which takes a long time.

Hard drives are now very cheap, so even if the one in your laptop fails, by a cheap HDD for it off of newegg and install that in your hard drive and give that to your mom.

I think $40 should get you around a 200 gb 2.5 inch HDD.

Well this hard drive is pretty stuborn. Still going but getting sluggish by the day. New laptop will be here today. I didn't realize the hdds were that cheap. If all else fails I'll get one

I never heard the click of death, but a hard drive can fail in other ways like if a large power surge, or lightning strikes your house, and the electricity zaps all your electronics and computers plug into the house.

I heard a weird noise only once but it was like when a cd rom isnt clipped to the drive properly and it vibates/wobbles @ boot.

Never have had a HDD fail on me. My brand new laptop that's now 7 months old has made noises and clunks whenever the HDD is in use, and my grandmas computer grinded.

I'ver never had this problem either. My laptop is about 1 1/2 years old, and my main computer is about 4 years old, I never got this problem.

Luckily I haven't ever had this, but atleast if my laptop starts making the noise I know why.
