So now the internet is free again

https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-internet-is-free-again-1513297405

It took a couple years but we have finally remove tyrannical regulations that keep the internet slow and not free. What do you guys think? What are you doing to celebrate?

EDIT: For those without wsj subscriptions basically this is #CultOfPai and Net Neutrality #GoTrumpFCC

We may not like what people say, but it can be ignored - especially when it's not to your face.

huh! Things aren't free. And if it is sounds like 500KB upload LOL

These are the same laws that were in effect literally two years ago. People lost their fucking shit over this.

Actual recordings of illegal things, like animal cruelty, should be banned, but if somebody wants to blah blah about stuff which offends people, then that shouldn't be illegal.

The internet is free because it is not being regulated by the government. The government ruins all! Particularly freedoms!

Yes! I don’t understand why the same people who hate Trump and Pai want Trump and Pai to regulate their internet.

If you can’t post recordings of illegal activity, how do you expose that activity when you find it and the authorities do nothing?

Net neutrality is not about regulating the internet. It's literally the opposite. Net neutrality is a regulation that prevents regulation of the internet. Net neutrality means that ISPs must treat all content on the internet the same, and they can not slow down or discriminate against content they don't like. Without Net Neutrality, we are giving corporations the freedom to regulate the internet, slow down content, block content they don't like, and do whatever the hell they want.

I'm not saying all ISPs will do any of that, but we're giving them the freedom to do so if they want to. Corporations will do whatever they can to maximize their profits, so I'd rather not take that chance. Do you really trust corporations to do what's best for you, instead of maximizing their own profits?

The entire argument against net neutrality regulation is that ISPs will enforce net neutrality by themselves. I don't see how you can be opposed to net neutrality regulations if you think everything will be exactly the same anyway. All the net neutrality regulation did was ensure that was the case.

It’s a foot in the door. The net neutrality regulations do not apply to content deemed “illegal,” which could be as benign as the average streaming site. The FCC is the government agency that makes sure you don’t broadcast bad content over the airwaves. I don’t think it is wise to give an agency with such a history of censorship jurusduxtion over the internet. God know that the Mike Pence administration may choose to block porn in the future, or impose regulations against swearing or anything that goes against Christian values.

Do YOU trust Donald Trump and Ajit Pai with the keys to your internet history and connection?

The government could choose to impose censorship/regulations regardless of whether or not we have a net neutrality regulation in place, so I don't see how that's relevant. Repealing net neutrality is not going to make that any less likely. The government should not be regulating the internet, and neither should corporations. Net neutrality is the one regulation that prevents the internet from being regulated, at least by the ISPs, and keeps the internet free.

I do not agree with the repeal of net neutrality. All I see if ISP companies just want to repeal a user protection to put pointless charges to how we access the internet. The internet already costs, but additional charges for services when it is the website's right to charge access or a service to the consumer. I am not sure of the limitations of ISP increasing monthly for fast internet, but not really cool to have the ability to charge for services that have no connection to what they are providing other than accessing the internet from their home. Like if the ISP wants to charge 4.99 a month for faster speed on Netflix. Why not just increase the monthly cost since they want more profit? Sure I am not going to use their service, but Netflix already charges for their service and ISP has no right to restrict access to additional fees. I am not quite sure why people hate net neutrality so much when it is protection. I can easily see Trump asking FCC to censor all news websites that are biased and criticize him for an extra charge so people will not have access to it. Just look at Countries that censor websites and content in general. Only if they have net neutrality and better leaders they will have access to all information.

Net neutrality has not been repealed. A repeal of net neutrality has been set into motion. But ultimately, it will need a final vote in congress before the repeal becomes actual law. Right now - it can still be fought before it passes the second and final stage.
