If they control the spam, delete the spam posts and make sure to clean up the forums a little by putting anti-spam registration in place then this could be saved.

This just shows irresponsibility on the owner's part. If the owner is going to be away from the board for any length of time, he/she should have a back up person there to clean up the mess at all times. Or if the owner is no longer taking responsibility for the site at all, then he/she should shut it down completely. Leaving it like that for that many spambots to wreak havoc as they please is just embarrassing.

You can't really say any of it is spam, because the owner has explicitly said it was an advertising forum, not a forum promotion forum. 😛

We aren't talking about the forums spam. Just all the members are complete and utter spam bots and all the off-topic area had to be locked for posting by the admin due to spam.

If almost all the folks going there are of the robotic persuasion anyway there's little chance that they'd be interested in roleplaying. That's a strictly human thing in my experience. Basically, wrong crowd for my board.

I am part of a forum that had/has spam bots joining every 5 minutes, and posting the same crap. Now I'm wondering if the admin posted an ad on there...

Which is why I use software where spambots can't get through. I see them trying though -- it's quite hilarious. 🙂

It isn't the softwares fault in this case,it is the admins.

Oh and vb has alot of anti spam mods so that is not an issue.

The owner probably doesn't know it is like that. He probably has just forgotten about the forum and now it has been taken over by thousands of spamming bots. What makes me laugh is that he has reCAPTCHA on the registration page.

Thus, reCAPTCHA can safely be deemed useless in spam fighting.
