Today Facebook shares took a massive tumble of 25% with most news outlets suggesting it's the result of the first ever drop in daily users. Personally I find that reasoning unlikely, I think it's more to do with Zuckerberg's move towards creating the metaverse, something still a little alien to big shareholders. At the same time it's worth noting that Microsoft has just paid $75 billion acquiring Activision Blizzard which I believe has very little to do with their gaming portfolio.
In both cases I think they are looking towards a future where people spend a lot of time and money living a digital representation of themselves which is not a million miles away from using an alias to represent yourself on a forum or other social media.
I think the metaverse will become a form of digital crack, incredibly addictive to many, providing a huge source of income to the companies that maintain it but what do you think?
[EDIT] This video give some idea of what to expect.
