This is such an important topic which will affect some of us later in life or at some stage..

There are too few ' success stories ' in the right to die with many governments around the globe being reluctant to pass laws on righ to die..which is understandable due to possible abuses by family members etc..

It's a sad state when we hear of youg people like the young rugby player paralyzed from the neck down in an accident having to take his ' last flight ever ' to his place of death at Dignitas in Switzerland...

That young lad had no quality of life left and that is what he truly wanted..who is anyone to deny him?

Who despite what some say, are a saviour to the suffering.

Who is anyone to try to dictate to those suffering in pain , discomfort & anguish every day of their remainder of life?

It really gets me when religious people especially say thoughtless , ignorant and disrespectful things about how 'God' wouldn't want this..that's the last thing a dying person needs, or most anyway..people telling them it's a sin to end your own life.

Just ridiculous.

And as for hospitals here in the UK, they still used the Liverpool pathway until two years ago anyway, probably still do even though they claim it's being fizzled out..

The dying are refused water and food, now I understand most can't eat anyway, but the option should still be there..to deny them water apparently ' helps ' ,it hastens death apparently but it also means patients endure more discomfort.

While the pathway might have been suited to some, it's not for everyone and to deny a basic thing like water is a disgrace.

What we also need to rememner are the efforts of those who over the years have tried and in some cases briefly succeeded in fighting for terminally ill people's right to die like Derek Humphrey..author of 'final exit 'who was respected by some but loathed vilified by others.

What are your thoughts on the right to die?

It's a very touchy subject everywhere. I read a story about a woman who fought cancer for a long time here in the states. She was finally told she had the right to choose and she chose to die, set up a date and everything. Being refused food and water is sickening, regardless if you are dying or not. I think people should have right to choose if they can still make decisions and informed decisions on their own.

I agree with Zimm. If I were sick with cancer and losing that battle and I was suffering horribly. I thinking choosing to die would be a mercy over living it if I were dying any way.

I think they should have the right to die, as long as they are informed properly of their conditions.. As long as they are informed of their options and know what they are doing, then they should be able to.

People that are not totally there however, eh, I think it should be left up to the next of kin, since they are probably making decisions for them anyway.
