Here’s not much Microsoft can really do to stop people using XP and force them to upgrade to the, just as fast and way more secure, Windows 7. This is despite all the mounds of positive press their latest desktop OS has received. However they can do little bits here and there.

Recently it was announced that their forthcoming browser, Internet Explorer 9 would not run on Windows XP. This is because it took advantage of technologies that exist only within Vista and Windows 7 to shunt graphics rendering and script processing off to extra parts of your hardware. This is a good move given that it’s what Vista and Windows 7 have always done with the Aero Glass

This week though, and it’s not quite so clear why, they’ve announced that the next version of the Live Essentials suite will also require Windows Vista or Windows 7 to run.

I say not clear because, with the possible exception of Movie maker, there’s nothing in this suite (that includes Live Mail, Live Messenger and Live Photo Gallery) that would need hardware acceleration (correct me if I’m wrong). I can only assume that Microsoft are beginning the process of dropping all support for XP because they know that it’s the only way they’ll ever get people to give up using it.

Sales of Windows 7 have been extremely strong, but sales of Windows XP in the last year have also been extremely strong, especially on netbooks. Now standing against the performance challenged Vista this was unsurprising, but now it must be an enormous thorn in Microsoft’s side.

The company has clearly decided that the time has come to try and force the issue, and it’s a good move. While Service Pack 2 for XP added new features such as a firewall and Data Execution Prevention, the security in this 2001 OS release is unbelievably shoddy compared to what came after it, and no tech observers on the planet will ever disagree.

While XP might be good enough for most computing tasks, it’s simply not good enough in today’s world where the threats to security not only affect you and your own PC, but often have knock-on repercussions for the people around you.

They want money don't they, getting rid of xp, the origanal xbox...What next!

It has to end at some point and XP is pretty old so i think it is just natural.

While it is sad, I find windows 7 is the new xp. Sure it might not be a lean as xp,but it is great.

I find XP still to be a very Capable and great OS. I been using at school and home for a few years. I mostly use my computer to watch videos on Youtube, browse the web, and do homework, and other daily tasks. XP has serve me very well. Plus, XP runs great on older computers.

I don't use IE so I don't really care for that. And Microsoft is just being stupid. :/

Its all about the money lets force everyone of Xp so they have to buy vista or 7, just big company abusing there power again, whats new in this world.

XP is just the pinnacle of computer engineering, it is such a beautiful OS. Windows 7 on the other hand (as stated above in some posts) is a fantastic release. Microsoft are doing a good job to throw people up to the latest release, dropping support for software on that OS though? Bad move.

What happens to computers in say my Gran's home? Or a netbook running XP? Although to be fair, IE isn't really worth the trouble and nor is Windows Live, Pidgin anyone?

I loved my Windows 7 installation but the latest Beta of Ubuntu 10,04 is simply incredible.

I'm on windows 7 64-bit now and it's pretty good. 🙂 I would recommend it. However if you're a big time gamer, be warned, not all games will run on Windows 7 off the bat, without some tinkering and modifying involved....However, I was able to get about 85% of my games to run on Windows 7 after some tinkering and googling. I still have a few that refuse to run, but I have not looked into a solution for them yet.

If my PC came with Windows XP instead of Vista, I probably would not of upgraded to 7 since the price tag can be can be kind of expensive for the Upgrade version of 7 at retail stores. The OEM version cost about one hundred dollars which seems kind of high.

I got the student discount version of 7 Home Premium which only cost 30 bucks.

XP seems to be great for non Directx 11 gaming and playing older games and software like Winamp.
