Now, I know what hacking is, but there's a lot of others who just assume the stereotypical nature of such. Now, I've gotten a lot of flak for starting a hacking forum, and I understand the amount of damage that the hacker name has received over the course of time, but can anyone really tell me what there own opinion of hacking is? I'm doing some research for my own forum and plan to write a few things on the subject, so please enlighten me as to your ideas on the subject.

I don't think 'hacking' in itself is that bad. Hacking can be used to find someone who posted a video of them beating their kitty. Or of someone making threats to do something.

Though, having had my blog hacked, forum hacked, and some accounts be destroyed through variations of hacking, it kind of leaves a bad taste in my mouth (the thought of it) and want to automatically dislike you for owning a hacking fora. But, like I said, taking a step back and looking at 'hacking' in general, it's not that bad a thing.

I think that hacking for a good reason like the ones I mentioned above are great, but just hacking forums and hacking websites when there's no reason for them to be hacked is terrible. Hacking for a good/legit reason (i.e. if the website was giving out your information or someone you knows information), then is fine.

Take a broken code, re-code so it works = you've hacked it.
The media have destroyed the word hacking, it's so sad.
I used to be an administrator at hackforums.net btw, they are fighting to reclaim the definition atm.

Just as Anathema said, hacking for the purpose of screwing with other people is wrong, but other than that hacking itself isn't a bad thing.

Thank you for all of your comments, and my forum is a white hat hacking forum BTW and as such I oppose all cracking endeavors unless it is a penetration testing environment.

Hacking is ok, to me, if it is used for 'testing' purposes.

If you learn hacking to test out your new forum software, sure that's fine.

If you're some kid who hacks anyone's site who calls him fat, that is not ok with me.

I'd say your a script kiddie for even starting a hacking forum. Real hackers never admit to being a hacker, and they certainly dont join or start a forum dedicated to the subject.

I beg to differ...

My statement applies to that forum, infact it is based on that forum.

I recon it really only becomes hacking if you use it to get into or onto someone else's work or computer. If so anyone who does should be punished to the full extent of the law, but as already mentioned the law can use this to catch the criminals.

I don't care much about that site, and there's a huge difference between White hat Hackers and Black Hat Crackers. White hats are security specialists who use their knowledge for defensive purposes 99% of the time unless other actions are required. Black hats are known as crackers and are malicious sons of *****es who "crack" (not hack) for personal gain or for the misfortune of others. Those who reside at the hackforum.net/ forums are mostly, if not all crackers. Of which 95% are script kiddies as Tovarisch said. But hacking is quite more than just using SQL injection to gain access to a forum, in fact that's not hacking at all, and to any who have suffered under this grievous endeavor I apologize for all *real* hackers everywhere. But to make this point clear, please refer to those who "crack" websites or forums as Black hats, or Crackers so as not to soil the already damaged name for others who are intelligent enough to try to help others or try to stop crackers.

Just trying to clear the misconception about it all...

If the modern Internet generation believes a certain definition for hacking and/or cracking, and it opposes the original definition, then you can't do much about it. Take the word "bland" for example. It use to always mean pleasant and peaceful, but now it has changed to boring and mild. Because of a change in understanding of society, words can change in meaning, whether you like it or not. We're just stuck in a phase of understanding and misunderstanding.

I believe hacking is infiltrating and modifying a hardware or software system, eg. jailbreaking, in order to gain advantage of that system.

Implying the federal police give a (word censors are lame) what a bunch of kids do in their spare time 😛

They give a damn about music people share, so yeah they do whatever they can do to waste tax money and get away with it.

For me, hacking into a website/forum etc is not acceptable and isn't something to be proud of when damaging others hard work, although hacking games so you can have a better experience when you are not ruining it for others I think is perfectly fine. Basically; hacking something for personal gain when there is someone done the line that is loosing out because of you is not right.
