I guess the tags of the new thread is important and if my guess is right that tag or tags will play a part in the search engine optimization which means a good tag can get traffic for the particular page. And if I am right then I think the forum should give emphasis on the tags so that creators of new threads will fill in the tags with good keywords that can get traffic from the search engine.

Well whenever I make a new thread anywhere, I never bother to put in tags 😛 But I didn't realise how important that is for a little boost. Thanks for that.

If what I am posting has an importance, I tend to add a couple of tags to it. Doesn't hurt by doing it. 🙂

Tags can be really helpful on sites with specific "forum only" content - as it makes it easier to find it.

I know importance of having tags on forum threads. These tags are the keywords that help search engines to find the forum and give a proper rank. Search engines not only rank the primary domain but also all the pages built on that domain. therefore, forum owners should encourage people to use tags.

I doubt if tag making could be enforced though. It's like trying to enforce good spelling and grammar.

OK, well, you could have some mod where a post could not be made - if no tags added. But I'm not obsessed with SEO - so I would never use that.
