This thread is to discuss anything and everything related to Microsoft's Windows.

What version of Windows do you have on your computer or laptop? Do you have a Windows Tablet, or phone? Discuss!

I recently got a HP Laptop from my brother with Windows 8, and have updated it to Windows 8.1.

I have Windows 7 on my laptop. This thing is several years old.

How is Windows 8 and 8.1?

It is nice, I love having the ability to have a few extra programs that I wouldn't otherwise have because of it. For example, I have a Facebook Program that I was able to download from Microsoft, that allows me to go to Facebook, with just a click of a button.

Is 8.1 difficult to learn/use?

I think it is more of along the lines of getting used to using it. The start menu no longer shows up as it normally does. When you go to the start menu, it changes the screen to be a full screen page, that you can use to have your favorite and most used programs as icons. Then, if the program isn't there, you click on a button that gives you the rest of the list of programs.

Windows 7 Home basic on Dell Inspiron and Windows 7 Enterprise Edition on ProBook 6470b from HP.

I have Windows 8.1 with Update 1 on a desktop computer. I like that I can play Gameloft's Asphalt 8, and Riptide GP 1-2 with my keyboard instead of using touch controls.

Racing games like Asphalt 8 are not very fun with touch controls because it is not as accurate as a keyboard's arrow key.

I have windows 7 but hardly ever use it. Windows is the most unoptimized resource hog of an os I have seen. For example, Minecraft with the FTB Monster modpack gets 5FPS on 64-bit windows, but gets a stable 60FPS on linux 64-bit with the same settings on the same pc.

That's insane. I've been looking into Linux for a while now...

Wow, 60 FPS in Minecraft wit your modpack must look nice.

I agree Windows is pretty resource intensive. I can play game like Valve's Dota 2 MOBA on Lubuntu Linux on my older desktop, but with Windows it would probably lag so much because of the high RAM usage of Windows 7-8.1 compared to Linux and Windows 95-XP which uses the least amount of RAM.

Yeah and that's just on a laptop. Once I get my gaming PC I'll probably get around 240FPS

That's pretty good Minecraft with mod pack performance for a laptop.

I read on a blog that Valve's Steam game run faster on Linux because OpenGL is faster than MS's DirectX's Direct3D.

"Valve has since been working to introduce optimizations and get the game working better using OpenGL. The end result? Leaft 4 Dead 2 now runs at 315fps under Linux (Ubuntu 12.04 32-bit).

Windows using DirectX. In fact, running the game using the same hardware under Windows only managed 270fps."

I recently got a new computer that has Windows 8.1 on it. While I am not used to using Windows 8.1, I can't wait to finally get the Windows 10 update, that will reintroduce the regular start menu in Windows 7.

Windows 7 Professional here; I'd much rather stick with windows 7 rather than windows 8. 😛
