The word graphic?

What do you think about Graphic Design being called.... well Graphic Design? Do you think it should be called it or not?
My college professor had said that he didn't like the term, and that they should change it to "Design" as it suits the process more.

I agree with him myself, as if I really think about it.... the word "Graphic" just sounds odd and it doesn't really sound like anything artistic, in my opinion.
Design sounds more artistic; I think.

What do you think? Do you think Graphic Design is a good word for it or not?

You cant call something design without distinguishing what type of design.

Graphic = visual.

So in reality there it is visual design which is really graphic design.

So it does make sense to call graphic design.

You make a good point, however I see "graphic design" being the design of specific "graphics" (signatures, banners, affiliate images, etc.), therefore earning the name "graphic design"

There are far too many aspects of design to cluster them all under one name, graphic design describes exactly that whereas web design describes design for web while clothes design describes the design of clothes

I agree with Terry on this one.

Another thing that I hate is that people do not understand that there are many different forms of design. Graphic Design is such a broad term and does not really describe what somebody does. Now if you were to say interface designer, then that is more appropriate.

I agree with this. How would we differentiate between interior/architectural/web/fashion etc design?
