Around the world, conservative groups have been gaining influence, bolstering the power of right-wing leaders. It is a trend driven not only by older generations but also by the young.

The rapid rise of Brazil's new far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro may have surprised some observers but it did not come out of thin air. His success follows years of support from powerful social movements.

Such groups have increasingly found a voice in countries from Poland to Thailand to India - their influence coming from ordinary people rather than politicians.
I'm not all that surprised to be honest, because I really do think the whole world itself is becoming more right-wing since about last year or so, not only from just politicans that wish to rule with an iron fist but also from the general public. Most may be very frustrated individuals that don't want any radical change to their country, especially when it comes to immigration and all that.

Worldwide democracy seems to be very unlikely and merely a figment of the imagination, at this rate :emoji-confused:

As I mentioned on your forum, I think fear of crime and frustration with minorities is fueling a lot of the hate. With such high crime rates and whatnot - with no real change in site, it's getting tough to defend various groups, and even mainstream political commentators, always the alt-right, have re-popularized the most viscous racism that was unthinkable when Obama or Bush was president.

Also, as I mentioned on the forum, the upper and middle classes in the US have become incredibly self-righteous and arrogant to a vile degree.

Now as for outside the US, as you noted in Brazil, the movement is becoming quite widespread - for similar reasons.

Yup. Turkey became right wing a few years back with Erdogan getting more power. Now Hungary, Poland, and possibly Austria are joining.

It's not just frustration with minorities as I mentioned, but also whites - and where I live (Appalachia USA) most of the population is white and there's a huge pain pill epidemic.

So to counter these "problems" a lot of the population has morphed into these super-chauvinist types.

I advise the admin to close this thread. It's making too many people angry. But note, it's not my intention to make people angry.

Anyway, on a side note, not trying to be offensive, but as noted in another thread I made, I feel there's a good deal of what I see as cowardly people hiding behind social media spreading this hate via social media. They're never held accountable for their barbaric talk in their own neighborhood, no teasing or beating up - so that speaks poorly of those areas! 🙁 So I think that's a good cause to leave, aye? 😉
