Back in the days... when I used free forum hosts, I always made sure to not use forumotion.com or freeforums.org. In my opinion they are the worst, and they have really annoying ads, and just forumotion itself is not well made, the forums look ugly and dont look like they are made properly. Freeforums.org takes away many features from their forums, which is why they are not good, and the annoying advertisements and limitations. But anyways if you have money, you should used paid hosting. 🙂

I haven't used too many free ones but the worst I used I think would be proboards. I've heard they are better now than when I used them probably at least 5 years ago. But when I used them I was not fond of it.

Yea I heard they arent that good either... a good free forum host would be prophpbb.com

There's no real "good" free forum host, however there are a few semi-decent ones.

The best way to go is get PhpBB3, SMF or MyBB. If you have the money, then something like vBulliten or IPBoard.

I don't know what so bad about free forums, they are better than five years ago and they really help you out even when you don't know much coding, I believe some skins are really nice. They have some customization ration and some communities have flourished very nicely there.

Anyway, I'd say proboards in itself is limited, but then again all the codes there that are just a copy paste helps a lot to enhance your experience, but from the admin point, the admin panel is kind of limited. I only didn't like that they would be so strict with keeping it English, but that aside, I had a nice time there and I was happy with the community.

He's right. Forumotion, Freeforums, Proboards, etc. All of them force ads on you and are often placed very inconveniently. Then, when you get to the point where you require ad removal, it's oftentimes more expensive than paid hosting (ask hcfwesker).

The only semi-decent one is Zetaboards. At least they remotely made their own software (hopefully).

Yes they are the best freeforum hosts... all of there forums look real nice, and they let you use your own domain... and much more.

yea paid hosting is better, but the free ones aren't THAT bad lol 😛
I don't like proboards at all, i agree and freeforums is meh but i kinda liked forumsmotion for a little bit

They are mostly all bad but the worst hands down is freeforums.org.

Not many really "good" ones out there (though, if you have no money or host or for some reason just want to go with a free one, I would recommend Prophpbb.com), but in my opinion Proboards is the worst. I loathe how all their styles look, the feel of the forums on it, and it's limited.

Zetaboard or prophpbb would be the only free ones I reccomend, they acctually are worth it, but yea paid is always better.

All free hosts are crap whether or not they specialise in forums. 000webhost screwed up a lot then they kept asking if I wanted to upgrade to their paid service! I told 'em where to go pretty quickly.

Yeah.

IMO, you should use free hosts to test an idea and see how much popularity you can build up, then if you start getting decently well known, move over to a proper host.

Now that I have a paid hosting service, though, I just stick all my sites on the same paid hosting account and see how many end up working well. As of yet, I've only seen fit to keep one running.

CreateMyBB; it has way too many limitations, and no themes to choose from...
