Notes:I'm Admin GG of http://thevideogameforum.com/index.php and I would highly appreciate it if you could give me some feedback on my forum I have created. We have recently made the upgrade to myBB 1.8 and have been around for a year now! Honest, but constructive feedback welcome! I'd like to know what people think.

The theme is bright and simple, but I appreciate the effort to customize it. It doesn't seem broken related to upgrading the version. Perhaps adding image to the banner will spark it up more. For a forum about video game, I feel you need to expand on video game-related content, not only the first 3 forums (well, there are events and competitions but more can still be added).

Good luck with the forum! 😀

Thank you! Im working hard to get the forum nice an functional.

Yes I've been thinking what I can add that screams video games more.

I have also chosen to make the sections I have based on the activity and content so far. I don't want to expand with loads of sections to make the place look bigger when there isn't alot going on. I am working on it though! Cheers.

A few things:
  • The drop shadow on the admin group really bugs me, I think you should get rid of that and just go with a color.
  • The background seems a little bland. Perhaps some sort of mild pattern would help spice things up a bit?
  • I'm not a huge fan of the forum stats bit. I like the idea of it, but it seems a little cluttered and I just end up skipping over it.
Good job keeping the amount of forums low; that's a huge mistake a lot of webmasters make on young forums! The only other suggestion I have is to make sure you're leading the way with content. You really can't post too much on a growing forum. Try to shoot for one new thread a day, and make sure you're responding to any new threads you get. Having section that haven't been posted in since last year looks a little tacky, but that's an easy fix.

Hope this helps! 🙂

So far, your forum looks great so far. You have a very good amount of posts and members for a starter forum that's about two months old. There are just a couple of things that should be looked at.

  • I was thinking of a new theme. The theme your using is a noticeable free theme(at least for me). Since you're forum is getting bigger, I would recommend a premium or custom theme to be added soon.
  • I agree with pandaa. The board stats and the drop-shadow behind the administrator group creates a whole big illusion. I just don't think it's necessary.
  • I would like point out that the forum icons look great; well done.
  • I think the Announcements forum should be put at the top of the forum. I didn't know there was an Announcements forum until..now.

Overall, your forum looks great. Keep up the great work..and keep up the great content. :great:

Hey pandaa! Yeah this was just me messing around with a plugin that allows you to change your username style. I chucked a shadow on for testing and haven't taken it off since. You can do all sorts of things to your user name with that plugin, including adding an image to the background of your user name. I'll get rid of it soon and settle on a better visual layout

I do agree, especially on a higher res monitor, things look a little white. I actually have a nice background pattern in mind that I used on the previous theme. I might give that a shot and bug you again for feedback.

I like it, because while activity is slow it's easy to see all the latest posts through the stats box rather that browsing through all the forums (not that I want to discourage this mind you). It's a quick go to for whats new. Most people don't know or don't give the time to search by new posts etc. I've tried to make this easier by incorporating 'View Today's Posts' and 'View Unread Posts' under the navigation bar once you login.

Yes I was told in the beginning for other forum admins not to have loads of categories and forums, and just to let the forum grow and expand naturally and add forums as needed. I have what I consider to be the basics, but I do tweak it from time to time.

Good advice. I always try to post in all threads. A new thread per day is a good goal. I love expanding and working on my existing game threads, and I have loads of other things I want to post about, just got to make the time.

I'll go through an ensure myself and other staff post in any empty threads.

Sure does, thanks so much for your feedback! Highly appreciated.

Hey Practical! Technically we are over a year old, but have spent the last 2 months on the latest version of myBB (upgrading was a pain due to all my customization, 90% of which I lost).

Yes it is the stock standard myBB theme. It's a lot more sleek and modern looking than their previous stock themes, which is why I have kept it so far. I have also keep it because most other 1.8 themes I have seen so far don't take my fancy or don't suit what we are about. I should start looking again though or potentially consider getting one made/making my own.

Yeah as above, will fix this.

You can thank my other admin for that, he does the graphics side of things.

Yes I do agree. It used to be at the top, but some of the members suggested moving it so the first thing you saw was the video games section. I agreed then, but having people see information about your site is vital. I post about all changes made to the site in that section. I'll move it again and see how that goes down.

Your forum is bright and very simple. I have to agree with Migi here. I hope one day your forum becomes famous. Good luck.

I like the colors of the forum! They are nice and welcoming.
However, not a big fan of the forum stats at the top. It kinda threw me off at first. Maybe move it to the bottom?

Good luck with your forum!

I'm still wanting feedbacck! The more voices the better! Loving anything anyone has to say that might be of help.

The theme is nice and simple and the colours are good. It just seems a tab bit dull and too simple to be honest for a gaming forum. Considering you have been around for a year the activity doesn't seem too good as you only have 2000+ posts which is not that good for a forum that old. The sections are good, not too many but too little and I love the custom forum icons

Yes I agree. I like the clean simple look, but it needs something other than the logo and icons that really defines it as a game forum. I was thinking a montage of gaming characters along the top, but thats a little.. generic maybe? Most sites have it. Not sure what to do...

The forum was made for a group of facebook friends originally. So it has succeeded that respect. I am trying to grow it though and get more users. Not sure what else I can do though, im been promoting it everywhere I can. Any suggestions?

It looks nice and simple. I don't really have anything negative to add as far as feedback. I like the banner and the way its set up. Good job. 🙂

I'm clearly going to be the debby-downer here. 😛

Some things I see..

-Default Theme? That would be the default MyBB 1.8 theme and I personally would get a theme that gives your forum something unique... Right now I think it's a tad tacky having those board icons and yet no theme to really give it that "pop-factor" and that's what members look for.

-Logo I would make the logo just a tad smaller so that it doesn't overlap the menu, for smaller screens space is everything and right now it's wasting some space that can condense that menu a bit.

Overall I think it's a neat forum, just something other than the default theme with a few edits. iPokemon just released an EPIC gaming theme and it would look really need, (maybe not with the icons..) however yeah.. lol

Yeah I just haven't found a theme that suits yet. I did like this theme I found called Square Theme:
http://community.mybb.com/thread-159593.html

I like my blue (can you tell? 😛). But I haven't really found anything else I liked. Not really into dark themes, and like lighter contrasting colours.

Back on 1.6 we had a pretty sweet theme going on that I heavily modified.

Yeah we are revising the logo again now. Will probably be smaller and have a game related icon of some sort in there.

Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it. And do you mean iAndrew? He has release a bunch of gaming themes:

http://community.mybb.com/thread-165251.html
http://community.mybb.com/thread-159962.html

I actually have the second one installed, but as said not a fan of the darker colour scheme. Although I could change it etc....

Do you run your own forum, or part of a bunch to base your preferences on?

I had owned a few forums before, lol. And yeah, iAndrew could possibly make it a lighter version. I've seen him do little custom modifications before.
