Well, I was thinking of getting a server with some cash I have and some that I will surely get from Christmas. I need it to host my websites and store data from computers in my house. So...

Anyone know a good brand? I looked at dells and they look nice, but im open to anything. Suggestions?

You need to have a very very fast connection for you to get a decent speed on your websites, and it needs to be looked after constantly. I don't know any brands but i wouldn't recommend getting a server tbh.

Could work, but still if you wanted to host your sites you would need a really fast connection and some ISP's don't allow it.

You'd need to check with your ISP before hand, and there's a lot of mucking around prior to getting it set up, setting it up, and then managing it after wards.

If I use you, id just get a shared plan if your hosting a small handful of sites, or a reseller if your hosting a few which require more bandwidth.

If you want to host a good bit of sites, go with a reseller. 🙂

You could get a VPS from VPSright, there good, but it would be rented, but they have all sorts of extras to manage it, you can get cPanel.

Dude, seriously. Servers are an absolute pain to run. You have got to have a great understanding of UNIX systems, you have to keep them cooling properly and you have got to have a really fast internet connection. And guess what, if you don't keep them running fast enough your site won't get any visitors! Sefvers crash, go offline etc all the time. And you will be the one running around trying to fix it. Because mark my words, they WILL crash on you.

On top of that, with the pain of managing your server you will be using time otherwise spent designing and marketing your site. Really, forgo the stress and get shared hosting. If you really want to be snazzy about it, get a dedi or VPS. Running a server yourself is a big no no however.

I thought of doing this once, just as a little project to see if I could, but my ISP doesn't allow it I found out. So I wouldn't suggest it unless you're 100% sure your ISP will let you do it.

It isn't all pain and misery, I run a server off my home connection, and yes it did crash a couple of times (mainly because of me doing stupid things), but it's a good learning experience. If you want to learn more about computers/the internet it's a great way to learn.

Of course the first few times your server will break, which is probably when you are trying out stuff that doesn't work out, but it's fun running a server.

Well first off he doesn't need to know a unix system. Second unix is dead and gone there are only unix based and unix like systems now.

Third he could run a windows server(I do not recommend)

Last, I would suggest A Linux Server Or Freebsd server.

Also, if your looking to just have that home file server, congrats it's easier than you expect. Just google "how to setup a home servver" and tada, you will find easy information. Though, it can be cheap too, just find an old PC you dont use, and there is your server.
