So yeah, like, how do you get them? 😛 We rank well in google and have a lot of affiliates that people find us through, but still don't get many click throughs from them or any one source. We also have a paid ad on another large RPG forum. Our signup rate per number of guests is pretty high, like I'd say one in around 8 or 10 visitors will sign up, but the problem is, we just do not get that many guests at all, I'd say only about 80 a day.
Well, I do use google webmaster tools every so often, when I'm curious about numbers I swing by my account. That's how I picked up what was coming from there. For a forum our size though..guest hits are abysmal. They sure aren't what they were before we moved. We were getting 1000+ a day then.
I do Tweet now and then from my twitter account, but I noticed that virtually nobody finding my site through there signs up.
That's actually pretty good, it seems to be normal like 1 in 10 or 12.
We've just been around quite a while now, and I've done pretty much everything I can think of in terms of promotion, just wondering what it takes to get those 1000+ a day guest numbers coming in.
Apparently, I've had 41 guests in the past 24 hours. You can have them all if you want, though. 😛 Most of them are likely spam bots/human spammers trying to get passed my anti-spammer mods.
Like THIS and THIS and THIS and yeah. And I jus grabbed those links quickly, like off boards on the topsite {Examples of success! Congrats guys, you give me something to strive for!} there are hundreds more I've seen. Also because they're fandom, entertainment and gaming forums like mine.
Not saying that where I am at right now is bad. It could just always be better. Our strong points are, good guest-to-join rate, member satisfaction and devotion. Our weak point seems to be lack of guest visits--whether they just decide to pass on the link, or whether they never see it in the first place, I have no idea.
Submitting your site to some relevant directories would get you some more backlinks and help improve your search engine rankings. Do you think that's something that might work for you?
Hm, I submitted my site to over 80 directories already. I guess more couldn't hurt but...
I submitted to Dmoz and Yahoo they never added me; should I do it a third time to dmoz and 2nd time to Yahoo?
So many of them want money from you to submit your site. I feel like that is a scam. If they want more sites on their directory they would let you do it free, plus I don't have that money after blowing so much already on advertising.
I tried to contact big boards.com and they are not answering me. I even said I would pay the $20 fee.
Still have no clear direction on where to go to fix this problem, and that is that our forum is just not growing at all. It has not grown in general number of active members since last November.
I submitted my business forum to DMOZ over a year ago and they haven't added it. I haven't added it since then, but I know at least one of our members has. I honestly don't know if it's a good idea to re-submit or not. I suppose if they are not adding your site anyway, it really can't do any harm to submit it again.
Our business forum actually has a paid listing in Yahoo, personally I'd say it's worth it if you have the money, because of what it does for your search engine listings. My belief is that Yahoo accept very few free listing sin their directory, and when they do accept a free listing it is generally from a charity.
Have you considered asking your existing members to help you support the forum by telling their friends about it? You could add a "Tell your Friend" service and then PM all your members asking for their help with growing the community.
Oh, I tell them all the time, we award forum points for it.
...You serious about Yahoo listings? It helps that much? In that case I'd sure pay. I'd do it in a second. But what happens if you pay and they don't accept you? Would I get a refund? $300 dollars is a hell of a lot of money...
Thanks for the suggestions! I'm going to immediately look into it.
I believe it was worth it for our forum, there were no big changes overnight but I have a feeling that the link in Yahoo helped to support and improve the forum's ranking in Google. It annoys me a little that I paid for the listing on Yahoo, yet we rank higher in Google than on Yahoo.
Truth is, I believe it helped but I don't know for sure and if you do decide to purchase a listing, don't expect a sudden and dramatic improvement.

Sorry I don't know. But I'd imagine that if you are careful and submit your site to the correct category, they will accept it. It wouldn't do their business any good if people were posting on webmaster forums saying they paid the submission fee but got rejected.
I actually may check those webmaster forums for posts like that. Certainly not something I can afford right now anyway.
Working on a new theme for when we do an upgrade, with the upgrade the forum should load a lot faster and look less cluttered. Hopefully this will help us.
Thanks for your advice =) Your forum is looking great too!
