What do you call it? I've always preferred calling it a topic over a thread.

I call it both, sometimes I say both or to the term of what people understand to

In English I am used to call it thread because I learned the word for the forums before I understood the actual meaning and how it related to the function. So when I hear "thread" I think on 'forum topic'.

When software began being translated to Spanish, they gave us the literal equivalent and that used to make me cringe as the context was lost, so I started calling them the Spanish equivalent for topic instead.

That said, I think 'topic' makes more sense nowadays unless the software is too simple and derives through replies, like reddit.

I have normally called it topics, but now I mostly call them threads depending on the forum software that is being used (as some actually call them threads, others say topics).

For me, a topic and a thread in a forum is the same. In the earlier days of the forum, thread was the standard term so you create threads and not topics. But now it seems like there is no more difference since users are not that strict anymore in the terms. A topic is a thread and a thread is a topic.

Both operate in the same manner but a topic can stand alone to be called one. It can have no replies or feedbacks. But a thread to be called one should have somewhat a pyramid downline pathway. That's how I look at it, my kind of a point of view. Nevertheless, I love them both.:kiss:

I see that on forums based on Xenforo, VBB, IPB, vBulletin,...they call thread. On other forums like Q&A, Lowendtalk, shouldmeloud, quora,...they call topic.

I say threads, I've been in the forum world way too long to start calling them topics.

All these newbs calling them topics...

I couldn't agree with you more. 😀 The nostalgia of hearing the word thread is just great.

I would use the word topic when a forum isn't "threaded." If it is organized into a tree structure, and then modernized to forums and sub-boards, that's still a thread to me. However, if we're talking about something fluid such as StackExchange or Reddit, the word thread doesn't really fit in.

I always used topic, but now I use thread.
It sounds more formal for me.

Historically, thread. But I mostly gravitate towards what'll make the most sense to people.
