From your experience, what types of threads have you noticed do well in any kind of forum setting?

Last post wins and the random chit-chat thread. Although, the chit-chat thread gets bigger than the last post wins. Also "Where did you hear about us" gets bigger too.

[firstly, any spam game]
Post your desktop, What are you doing now?, game reviews tend to grab attention, latest games, windows 7, windows vista, windows xp, iphone topics, what is your name, post your photo.

Stuff like that are quite good for discussion. Maybe the Win7 was a "then" topic, but still should attract at least 2 pages of discussion. Eg. Why do I hate Win7? Should I get Win7?

On forums with a legitimately intelligent userbase, threads that require actual thought tend to do quite well.

Picture threads often work, Only a couple times have I seen a general photo thread fail and that was due to the one who started it had good imagery that users felt they could not keep par with.

One particular image thread that is always sucessful though is the classic "Show your self" picture thread. Those always work reguardless of the image quality.

*Nods in agreement* That's what I've been noticing too. Any off topic thread that anyone can reply to with sometimes nonsense, random posts will get bigger as one gets more members.

I personally think forum games threads will always get bigger in matter of posts.. 🙂

Forum game threads aren't what you should consider "threads that do well." They're meant to have many replies on them. That's what they're made for.

Any debate threads. People like to argue. 😀
Really if you give the reader room to form their own opinions in your original posts you'll get a good thread.

Well, for debate topics, Religious Discussion is always a good one. You can always just take a fairly decisive issue, like abortion, present two short, opposing arguments, and ask your users what their view on the matter is.

The good ol' fashioned debate topics like..
abortion
religion
death penalty
health care
prostitution
legalizing marijuana

etc etc etc

usually do really well..

Your favourite quotes, books, movies, band, etc can do well.

As can what music are you listening to right now or what are you doing right now, threads.

Biggest topic at Dashing was the 'Never Ending Story', but that was mainly because we had a fair few consistent contributors.

Otherwise, forum games, 'Ask' threads, chat topics and 'favourite' threads usually go pretty well.

But of course, you need the audience to contribute to them. 😛
