Has this happened to you? Someone 'tried' to say they would do it at school at Web Surf but I blocked their login. I don't really think people understand what backups mean. Anyways, has it happened or has someone threatened?

No, never had someone threaten to hack or crack my forum. What people don't understand is, they aren't as smart as they think. Some forum providers are really good when it comes to preventing hacks.

I find it pathetic when people threaten to hack, yet they don't even know how.

I've been there. Change all your passwords to something really secure - use numbers, upper & lower case letters and symbols. Use different passwords for every area of your site, e.g. your username, FTP, control panel log in, databases, etc.

Password protect your admin directory in your hosting control panel.

Make and keep regular back ups, off the server.

never happened; although I know people who can turn site offline for over period of time aka D-dos..

The only reason for you to feel insecure is if you use a Life Password. You may as well give your password to a hacker if you do that.

Someone got a hold of my account on Forum Advertiser. They deleted EVERYthing, sent a spammy mass email out to the members, closed the forum and redirected it to their forum....
Had it restored the next day like nothing happened. Gotta love backups. 😀

I had an attempted hack on my site few months back that was unsuccessful. My password was too complex. Turns out it was some member called Nero who suspiciously enough sent me a PM asking for an admin position. The way it was written, sorta in a demanding tone, was suspicious, and as soon as I blocked the guy's IP, the attempted hacks stopped...

Just to clarify something for everyone;

If they are attempting to get in via your password, it's "cracking", not hacking.

Yep. I've had people try, but as long as I'm running the most up to date version of my software (which I'm not on one forum  ) they won't succeed.

Negative sir, that's called being compromised.

And I've gotten threats from guys at school but nothing ever came from it.

Being compromised is having somebody give out a password, not using a library attack or similar to find it out.

A common approach is to repeatedly try guesses for the password.

"Hacking" is using software. "Cracking" is by guessing, having the password [via user giving user the password].

No forum is un-hackable, and there is always a way and most of them are real simple 🙂

I've had a friend try and hack my site in front of me, just to see what the security is like. Other than that, I've never had a threat or anything of the sort.

You have to update to the latest version of the system you're using. Same goes for Windows or Apple. Someone can gain access into your computer if your using a very very old version. Even then hackers still get in. 50% of all hacks are due to sites, forums or computers running an old version.
