For a HUGE contest, for example giving away $500 worth of prizes. How long do you feel a contest like this should run for. Do you think it should have a specific date, or do you think it should be for an achievement. Such as, this prize will be given out once we reach 10,000 posts, or 1,000 topics. Or something along those lines. Post your thoughts below.

I ran a contest like this on a defunct project of mine. I think it ran for about a month. It was a posting contest, but I made sure the members don't post junk, only good useful stuff. It went OK, but you need to understand that the activity you have during a contest is not the same you'll have after 😉

It depends. If you have a goal, like contest finishes when you reach 20,000 posts for example, then your prize will only be given when progress is made which is good as you are guaranteed to get posts for your investment. However, the goal needs to be realistic, otherwise, members will get bored. An example of an unrealistic goal is 100,000 posts when your forum only has 10,000 post.

If you go for a set time frame, then you need to make sure there are members that are interested beforehand, otherwise you may end up giving $500 for the top poster who only made 200 posts in a month which is wasn't worth it.

Overall, it depends on your forum and the level of interest your members have. I would go for the one that will generate better results based on your prediction.

If your forum uses its own currency system, and the members make heavy use of them, then why not offer to give those away? If you cater to people who want to start a forum or a blog, then you could reward them with a couple of domain names and/or hosting space on your VPS.

I personally wouldn't give away anything tangible. I'd feel that the only reason someone would join is to mooch off your hard work.

Thank ad, very useful.

I won't host any contests until I have a decent amount of loyal, active members.
That way I'll be able to avoid the problem that most other forums holding contests have: instant inactivity when the contest is done.

It also depends on what kind of contest you are doing too. If you are holding a contest where members have to design or create something of their own, then you want to be able to give them enough time to actually do that.

$500 is a pretty substantial prize for a contest on a forum. If that was my budget for contests, I'd split it up into 5 different contests over the year (with $100 being the grand prize in each of them).

I think what you made it was a good time for a contest with huge rewards like that.
