Here are a few tips for forum owners.

• 
  [*]Use FP!: Look for every promotion forum you can in the basic advertisement area.

This will get you backlinks and a higher google spot.

• Have a HTML Front Page.

If you google FP you will see it comes up with their homepage. It has an instant description so Google users know what it is.

• Exchanges.

Are nice. It will make your forum look sucessful.

You forgot to mention, "...which will hopefully make your forum successful," as just making the activity look successful isn't a admin's goal, at least it shouldn't be.

But basic tips nonetheless.

Wrong. I have been part of FP for almost 2 years now, and only have 6 backlinks in Yahoo and 0 in Google.
For backlinks I get a ton from simplemachines.org

Still, those forums are filled with links (like all promotion forums) so you won't get many backlinks. If you're on a site that's popular and doesn't have many links on the pages, it is optimal for backlinks.
