I see people all the time asking what they should make a forum about.
Should I do my forum about gaming?
You see many people now days wanting to run a gaming forum. In my opinion, if you are wanting to run a gaming community, then you need to have a good niche about the games that you want to make it about. If you make it a general gaming, then you need to ask yourself something. What makes my forum different then playstation.com? xbox.com? People will not come from those huge sites just to come be active at yours. You need to get something that those sites do not have. That's basically like: Say you have everything xbox.com has. Why would they go to a less active and less known site that has same things on another that is way more active?
What about a general discussion?
The same rules basically apply as with the gaming, you need to keep it all original. If you go copy and pasting something from other sites, why would users go all the way to your forum just to read things they may have already read before?
Does the way my forum is hosting affect how active and successful it may become?
Some may have different opinions on this. In my opinion, yes. It has a major impact on how it is hosted. If you are hosting on one of those free slow hosts, then users may get annoyed waiting for your site to load and they will just leave and not come back. If you have one of those hosts you have to pay for, usually they are worth while.
Also, some free hosts will place advertisements just to make their money off of you. Some don't even offer support.
