How do you all feel about having to be 18 years of age or older to buy cigarettes?
Up until a little bit ago the CT state law was that you had to be 16 or older to smoke them. The federal law stated you had to be 18 to buy them, but there was no law on how old you had to be to smoke them.
Now (in Connecticut at least) you have to be 18 to both buy and smoke cigarettes or tobacco products.

How do you all feel about this?
I am 16 years old and have been smoking for over a year. I smoke a pack a day give or take. Yes there are health concerns, but it doesn't influence my driving, my academics (as long as I don't skip class), etc. The point is it is nothing like alcohol or drugs except that it may hurt your health. Tobacco doesn't influence me to do something stupid. Literally the only thing they have over minors smoking cigarettes is that they may have started because of peer pressure and there are health risks because of it. Yes, I started because all my friends smoked. However, my friends were smoking cigs, pot, and drinking in 8th grade, but I didn't start any of that until my freshman year around Christmas.

I don't really know what I am getting at, so what is your view on the tobacco laws (both Federal and State laws if they differ)?

Im from Indiana and it has always been like that. You had to be 18 to buy AND smoke. Now I think they are raising it to 21, or at least trying to.

Im not sure what it is here in SC.

I honestly dont see why they put ages on cigarettes at all. Kids just find ways around it and they start smoking younger and younger. Teens buying cigarettes will never stop no matter what the age to buy or smoke is.

If you know the risks and are still willing to do that to your body, then go right ahead and do it. Its your body.

In MA where I live there is no age restriction on smoking cigarettes, so yeah 12 year olds can smoke cigs in front of the police station and they can't do anything about it, it's not that big of a problem, I mean it's not gonna stop kids from smoking, why change the laws?

I think that they should keep it the same. Tobacco is bad for you.
So is the crap they put in our food 😉

I am trying to quit, but I can't and the law can't make me stop.
Last week a cop made my friend and I put out our cigs and told us the law. He is the only cop who has ever enforced that law. However, since we were polite and talked to him enthusiastically he did not fine us or anything.

However, even if he did fine me I don't think that would make me stop. What is a $50-90 fine compared to $240+ a month on cigarettes. It's nothing.
