I do agree back in the 00's well 2004 - 2010 there was a lot of forums about its how we all connected before facebook started and became popular and worked well. i do see forums still doing well but have to do a lot of work in finding it interesting for your visitors to get involved and be part of the community. for me i dont think forums will die its just how you promote yourself and is the content useful to your visitor, it takes time to build this niche.
I don’t think there are that many webmaster forums compared to when forums we’re really starting to take off in 2008ish. I do believe there are a a lot of “general” discussion boards with an emphasis on webmaster topics that don’t make it past 1 year. 😛
Making money out of a board is not as easy as it used to be. One major drawback is that all free forum software has some fault. Nothing that can match the paid ones.

I disagree. They all have different features and some are better than others but paid doesn’t equal better.
xenForo is good however £55 a year for a licence is crazy. Why not use phpBB which is free and is easily competitive to xenForo.
I like xenForo but it’s not amazing. I prefer phpBB and it’s biggest bonus is it’s free. If you’re starting a forum then paying for software isn’t the best idea unless you can make a return on it which most don’t.
I think there is less now then ever, obviously the ones that are around now seem to be of a higher quality, but I remember years ago being a member of a heap of great webmaster forums, slowly most turned to crap, some got bought out and run into the ground, other webmasters just gave up.
