What are people's top five tips for getting people using your forum.

My forum has been running for about a month now and I only have about 11 users, which isn't enough to build up a head of stream that keeps things going.

Post lots of new topics yourself everyday to give something to talk about it will help kick things off on top of that you need to advertise of course.

I not experienced with Forum Promotion, but I would say. . .
1) Tell everyone about your site. In real life, online, etc.
2) Reply to blogs, post forum threads, add your site to your signature, etc.
3) Be patient! My forum has been open 1 and 1/2 months so far, and i only have 10 members. It takes a while to build up steam, just don't give up on it.
4) Make sure your forum is something that your passionate about, otherwise you won't want to post content in it. Remember, Content is king. Post LOTS of content, all the time.
5) Make sure your site looks pretty. We live in a society that digs pretty things.

Bottom line, to be frank and honest.
It depends on the content of the site.
If your site is about boogars, then its safe to assume your target audience will be kids from the age of 3-11.

If your site is something relevant or has its own niche market, then the potentital for growth is unlimited. Provided that you have enough interesting content and update it daily.
The problem with forums is people create them thinking everyone will automatically flock to be part of it.
Thats the furthest thing from the truth.
It takes hours of work, promotion, dedication, and the ability to gain an edge on your competitors.
Try networking with other similiar sites to exchange banners, or just Create your own network.

I owned an online movie site that had over 50,000 members before I sold it.
I also owned an interracial community that held the 3rd highest membership record in MSN history with 175,000 members.
That was the biggest headache EVER !
So know what you're getting into before you start, and be ready to do the work it takes.
