Not bragging, but HostingCompany.xyz is now getting around 20 people online at one time rather than 5 or 6 as in the past. What could be bringing people in? Note, the pay-for show thing on here gets some, but I think there must be backlinks from somewhere else.

Have you been doing anything different? Do you have any analytics showing where the traffic is coming from? If not, I'd recommend getting Google Analytics or something that can track that if you want to know where traffic comes from exactly.

well good for you! what has chnage!

Google Analytics would be useful in this case, as well as other sources of data. You want to see where your traffic is coming from and how they behave.

My take on the increased traffic is due to the interesting content of the boards. If there is something to read that is beneficial to me then I would go back. Or perhaps you have good posters there who are known by other writers. It's just like the so called influencers whose writings are admired by the others in the field.

It could be bots indexing your site. Ours often has 40+ and most of those are stupid crawlers. If I had access to the robots.txt myself, which I don't, I'd be limiting ones like Yandex and Baidu.

I hope not. But XenForo says what are bots and what is traffic. Also, when the ad for the site isn't showing on ForumPromotion the traffic dries up.

That's the key, but it's still tough to get people to sign up as members, even with good content.

Xenforo doesn't though. It marks some of them as robots, but not all of them. It can say, 4 robots and 25 guests, when a number of those guests are also undeclared search engines. Google and other reputable search engines never hide their bots, but others do unfortunately. I check the IPs here and there just to see what kind of traffic is on the site.

Certain search engine rankings do guarantee good traffic but are massively tough to get. I had them at one time for employment sites - and it was real because I made money.

Oh yeah, just saying to be careful about sudden spikes in activity and check them out to ensure they are organic and not all or mostly from the same source. (Like all from 54.xxx.xxx slightly different unique IPs all at the same time) Our spikes in activity are often just a hit on bandwidth.

I don't think doubled traffic is always a joke. If it's via search engines it's real. I used to have some employment websites and made money from them. But this stuff probably isn't from search engines - nor AdWords, BingAds etc..

That's really good, just keep up the great work and make sure to keep that traffic and build more up!

We've had 40 Yandex crawlers on the site at the same time before though and it was slowing down the site. How many real people from Russia who aren't going to set up bots are interested in a small English language forum? Willing to bet, none. I would block that search engine if it was up to me, but unfortunately it's not. Baidu is another PoS. :arghh: :banghead:

I don't really have a problem with search crawlers, except for that time where Googlebot went crazy and span on the same page over and over literally three hundred times. Confirmed by local analytics and Google Webmaster Tools.

Beyond that, there's the stuff like Yandex and Baidu which I welcome whole-heartedly, I really don't care about them. What I do care about, well not necessarily care about, but which pique my interest are the vast majority of the bots.

Some of which are annoying paid SEO analysis service bots, I find them annoying because they crawl my pages, analyse them, and put the results behind a paywall while using up my resources.

With Baidu and Yandex, at-least they're indexing my site and putting it in the results for people to find. Every little helps.

And the other part are the bots looking for exposed installations of phpMyAdmin. Each bot will blast three hundred views in a split second with three hundred different paths where phpMyAdmin might be.

There are a *lot* of these bots. And while I'm not that worried about them slowing things down that much, they're just annoying.

I'm using statcounter and its really great it can also gives me some ideas on what to improve.
