What are some reasons someone would transfer ownership from a forum, site to another? I see a lot of people buying & selling & was wondering what prompts someone to do so.

One main reason is that they have too much going on in there real-life with collage and work and they have no time or effort to put into there site. Another big reason they can't afford the upkeep anymore regards server costs and other costs.

Keeping the site going for me is inch by inch with how much it's costing me, IPB is great but damn it's not cheap.

Those who buy/sell. Do you need to give your real name & postal address? I can see buying/selling to friends, people you know but what of from strangers? How do you keep the sale safe & secure & not get ripped off?

The main pro is you don't have to start from scratch.

The main con is that you may be buying a community that is attached to the current owner.

It is very wise to do research first even if that means joining with a username that can't be tied back to you and making sure you "home inspect" before you buy!

This maybe on the same kind of subject

So what should also happen if say the actual person who owns the site such as the domain, license, etc just suddenly passes away or they just stop logging on? My plan with any current or future forums where I become/became Admin is to perhaps discuss this possibly with the owner. I hate to think negatively or anything, but I have seen site owners pass away and the forum wasn't able to be updated etc.

As someone who was an Admin and mod of forums where the just either stopped logging on, or just randomly shutting down, I wished the owner would have given the database/backups to a staff member (be it a mod or admin) instead. The big pro is for sure not having to start from the beginning as said above. Yes, I've seen forums be given to another person and the userbase not react kindly. I do think it's smart to use a different username and just 'home inspect' before buying or being given ownership.

I have given my husband & my mom both information if anything were to happen to me. To shut down my forum & contact some people so they know. Too often people have dropped off & we never know if they are dead or just was done with forums.

Either way in both situations there should be some form of communication between staff so if someone wants the forum to stay online it can under new ownership. In the case that something happens to the owner, I would hope they tell their family members about the site and their log in information so their loved ones can inform the forum and look into transferring ownership to another staff member.

Yeah, for sure. I know that some deaths are unexpected and so the owner may not have ever thought of giving his/her login info to a family member or or two, perhaps even a staffer if no one else.

There are people who create forums and blogs just to sell back and profit, so, these people frequently, create sites and sell their sites. And there are people who create their site with a lot of fanfare but later lose motivation to continue and then try to transfer ownership to someone who is willing to take the charge.
