How do you deal with people who sign up just to troll your forum without directly committing rule violations?

I'd ban them immediately and IP ban them as well. I've had a problem like this in the past. I forgot to set email approval on one of my forums and after some drama that was going on in the Mighty No. 9 community I had a bunch of people join my forum and start spamming and harassing my members. That was a pain to clean up, I was at work when it happened too so my co admin had to step in and fix things.

Isn't it awful that people feel it's okay to behave like that?

I'm probably far too lenient, but I'd give a warning first since they're not outright breaking any rules, followed by a ban for continued behavior. Give them a little bit of a chance to redeem themselves, unless they're really being a nuisance, then we'll just skip straight to the ban. I probably would just do a basic ban, unless they gave me reason to do an IP ban.

I ban them,

Trolls bring drama. Drama brings a toxic forum. A toxic forum typically never recovers.

Stop it before it gets out of hand by banning them from the get-go.

I've just had a member return after being away for over ten years. He had previously made a few high quality posts but on his return he's only posted passages from the Bible which is not really appropriate on a technical support forum although not directly against the rules.

He won't stop and has became abusive because I've started to delete his posts. Apparently I'm going to burn in hell for all eternity. I rarely ban members but I don't really have a choice in this case.

I'd probably issue a quick temporary ban - usually this is enough as they lose interest and don't come back.

I recently banned two accounts of the same person who came to my board to troll the board and my members. I won't tolerate it. If you're coming to cause disruption and annoy others out of spite, you deserve the ban stick.

Thankfully I don't have trolls on the forums I own. I do have a few trolls on the forums I manage but unless they directly violate rules, I cannot do anything.

Warning and then ban. I am too old to have patience with troublemakers and people who are in your community to be nasty won't be easily converted in good members (if they were good members in the first place, they wouldn't cause a stir).

A forum, that I really enjoy and have been apart of for 5 yrs does this to users who join just to cause problems. Even if they haven't directly broken any rules. The mods know they're circumventing and exploiting loop holes around the rules just to be obnoxious. And this is the message that displays after their ban.

My forum is very new, I don’t have trolls yet but I understands I grow, I will be seeing trolls.
