I am looking at getting a .tv domain and am just wanting to see people's opinions.

The .com is already taken however there is nothing hosted. I contacted the person and am yet to receive a reply.

The only downfall I can see from a .tv domain is that it will cost me $50 a year.

Are there any other negatives?

Not really worth the price you pay for it. Get a .com or .net and pay 1/5th the renewal fee's per year.

As I explained those domains are already taken.

The price tag does not really bother me. Are there any negatives other than the price?

A .tv domain extension from what I know of, is supposed to be dedicated to actual television shows, so why buy it?

So think of something else. 😛

That's proven to be quite a task... 😛

I was not aware of this and I didn't think this to be the case

the1 will your site be related to a TV show, star or channel? If not, you're probably best avoiding a .tv domain. The biggest disadvantage you will have is that a certain proportion of people looking for your site will type the domain name into their browser followed by the .com extension.

.tv is a country specific domain dentist, like .me though that's not what it's used for. It can be for anything but makes most sense for sites related to tv shows.

Yes my site will definitely be related to movie/tv shows.

Hmm, I will have to make a decision.

But all the .com domains that I am interested in seem to be taken and .tv is related to my site and nothing is really taken.

If have a similar unrelated question.
Is it possible to wait till the .com address has expired and buy it before the current owner renews?

Yes, but only if the current owner doesn't renew and if no one else buys it. Plus it won't be available for sale as soon as it expires, there is generally a period of grace to allow the owner to purchase it, before it becomes available for anyone else.

Thanks, for the info Fergal.

Maybe the current owner will not notice the expiry...

That's possible, but chances are they will receive expiry notifications from their domain registrar.

I have yet to have a domain expire, I was unsure of the process.

Nothing is even hosted on the .com domain that I want. I emailed the address that came up on the WHOIS and am yet to receive a reply (I emailed like 3 weeks ago)
